Is it odd to get a king full of spawn this late in the year? I just got one tonight silver yet and full of spawn at Port Austin after every one saying the runs over im just wondering if it was a freak thing...it was a mistake it was a big brown the thing was just so silver i didnt even think of it being a brown..now with that being said im hearing that the spawn of a brown is better to fish with then anything and would appreciate some input on it and has any one tried to die or color fresh spawn just wondering ....
There is no need to dye the brown spawn. I, for one, am of the train of thought that keep everything as natural as possible. Like in the advice that was given in the other thread... keep some out fresh if you will be going in the next 1 to 2 weeks. And then package the eggs into individual packages with the size of each package being about the amount you would use in one weekends worth of fishing. That way... by happen chance that you don't use much of it during the next week or two... not alot will have gone to waist. I actually package my single eggs and skein with a Food Saver. It does a nice job and does not squash the eggs. I just took some king eggs out from 2004 to use for chum while fishing for whitefish and they actually looked just like they had come out of the fish.
Now... that being said... I know there are guys that will cure them and do really well using cured eggs. It is just my choice not to do so.
You do have a pile of gold with that brown spawn. When the steelies are in... and if they are feeding.... YOU will be the one catching fish... guaranteed!!
By the way... it's nice to share!! :D

I've caught em in late November before. Call it odd or unusual if you like but not really unheard of. I'd rather have the brown though.

I'm sorry sir, but that's crossing the line, we're gonna have to confiscate that brown, pump and all, and make sure it gets used properly:D !

well i was watching an outdoors show a while back and noticed they were using green and hot pink colored salmon spawn and doing well..im familiar with the borax and jello type curing but would rather use fresh just wondering if any one has tried food coloring or something similar.....theres just some days those freaky colors work better for other species if nothing else ill just try for myself ...i did try using some iceing coloring earlier but there werent enough salmon around to really test different colors but i got a very natural color with it that took a good hour to bleach out....
just wondering if any one has tried food coloring or something similar
I have use food coloring on boiled single salmon eggs before and it works great!! I have mostly used red... and yellow from time to time. Have not used it on eggs or skein for salmon/steelhead... but I see no reason why it should not work.

thanks don ill be trying that more this fall and winter i know the steelies will eat hot pink and chart yarn flies so it only seems like a natural egg of that color would produce too but time will tell

I ran across this method of curing roe while looking for somthing else. Looks to be a little more involved than the Borax method.
