I haven't bowhunted in a few years, I just gun hunted but I have now recently moved north and will be picking up the bow again. I have a buddy that has shot a doe and a button buck with his bow in the past 2 weeks and my question is since he used up both tags on the combo license is his hunting season over now without taking an anterled deer. This might be a stupid question but like I said I haven't bowhunted since the combo tags came out and I usually gun hunt Lenewee and Hillsdale counties during shotgun, take my buck and be done for the year. Plus I kind of want to know because he said he was going to go out again and if he has used up his tags for the year, that will tell me what kind of hunting ethics he has if he plans to go out and shoot another one. Atleast I will know not to go into the woods with this guy. Thanks for the help.

depends, does he have a regular antlerless tag? if not then he has used both combo tags and should not be out deer hunting anymore.

I know for sure he has no anterless tag. He hunts Benzie county and they didn't hand out any this year. He has used both combo tags.

He could still hunt for doe if there are antlerless tags available for the DMU he's planning on hunting. (Of course, he has to PURCHASE said tag).
Here's the link for info on the Combo Tag (he CAN use both regular and restricted tag in Archery season to take an antlerless deer)

I'm thought that if you only had a combo tag, you could not take more than one deer that had less than four antler points on one side, regardless of whether it is a buck or doe. Am I wrong in this? I'm not trying to accuse this guy of anything since I don't have all the facts, just seeing if I got this wrong.

Always has been like that for the combo license.

from my understanding is you are allowed to take to anterless deer with the combo license during archery season, but if you use one during gun season you have to take a buck, a restricted buck if you used the first tag on a small buck during archery or gun or just a buck of any size if you used your first tag on a doe. Someone please correct me if I am wrong.

Well I just walked up to him and said well since you shot that second deer your hunting season is over now huh. He said nope, I tagged that second deer with my girlfriends tag, who doesn't hunt, she just buys tags so he can use them. Thanks for the help anyways guys. I don't know what one person could do with 4 deer, seems like way to much meat for someone but whatever.
Hopefully everyone has a good safe season and maybe in the next couple of weeks I will be posting a pic of my first bow kill this year. Thanks agin guys for the help.

Jay, You do realize that what he did is considered illegal?

Thanks Boehr, that's good to know.
Llewellin, it doesn't sound like your buddy is a real ethical guy. You'd probably be better off hunting on your own or with someone else. That being said, back in North Carolina, you can shoot six deer a season, so if you got enough freezer space, there is no such thing as too much meat. However, given the laws are what they are, this guy doesn't seem adverse to bending the rules to get himself more meat.

combo tags:
restricted tag (does not matter if it is used first or second) may be used during archery season to tag an antlerless deer or an antlered deer with 4 or more points on one side. during firearms season the tag can only be used for an antlered deer with 4 or more points on one side.
Regular tag (again does not matter if it is used first or second) may be used during archery season to tag any deer. During firearms season the tag can only be used to any legal antlered deer.

Yes I know, but really what I am suppose to do. It is the owner of the company I work for son. Plus he could be just talking a big game but if I know him I doubt it. Plus how would they prove it now, the deer was cut up last night. All I can do now is not enter the woods with this guy. I do have one good hunting buddy but he don't bow hunt. I am 29 yrs old and the hardest thing for me to do is find friends for one that like to hunt and the second is to find a buddy that hunts with the same ethics as I do. Which ain't hard, usually as long as you hunt legally and safe tahts enough for me but to tell you the truth its hard to find people like that. I have met more people hunting that I just look and say no wonder why people have such a bad image of hunting these days, these are the people representing our sport for us. :dizzy:

Well, presumably no one on this site knows your buddy, only you. Therefore the choice is yours. You can decide whether you want to hunt with him or not, its your decision. He could be a standup guy who thinks what he is doing is legal for all we know. So I take back what I said earlier and you can make your own ethical judgment.

Yep, the girlfriend is a violator also because her tag is on a deer she did not kill.

Its ok NC Hunter. I know what he is doing is illegal and because of that it shows me what kind of hunting ethics this guy has. Plus let me correct this, he is actually not a buddy but what he is an acquatence that wants me to hunt with him, but after today and what he has showed me, that will never happen.
