Im just wondering what every one uses on this site? I tried a new Braodhead this year and i am having great succes with it. I am using the Rage Expandable three blade. Is anyone else using this broadhead and what kind of succes are they having? Here is a pic of the deer i shot with one of these rage heads. It left a blood trail like i have never seen even with a gun it was a red road.desktop

I used to use expandables with great success. I switched to a fixed blade G5 Montec when I started to hunt larger game (Elk, Moose, Caribou, etc.) as expandables worried me. Rather than re sighting in a new setup I stick with the fixed blades. No deflection. Sturdy construction. Less to worry about. To each his own on Whitetails but for larger game expandables are a bad idea. Congrats on you deer!

Some states mechanicals are illegal on large game too. I have always used the razor sharp and tough thunderheads.

I switched a couple of years ago to the G5 Montac and am extremely satisfied. Prior to that I used Game Tracker Silvertips and before that used Muzzy 125's. The Montec's hit exactly where my field points do and hit harder that the other two.

This will be my 24th year or so of bow hunting and I have only used two types of broad heads. Originally I used 140 grain Wasp 4-blades. Some time in the 80's I switched to Thunderhead 125's and have been using them ever since.
People will argue or discuss pros and cons of one broadhead over another. In the end it all boils down to practicing with the type of tip you hunt with, taking high percentage shots, and putting the broadhead through the chest. If you do this, most broadheads will yeild the same results.

I switched this year to NAP Nitrons and they are great! I'll never use a different broadhead. I have used Spitfire broadheads in the past with excellent results also.

If I hunted from the ground, I would probably use a mechanical. From an elevated position though, and not always having a broadside shot, I prefer a head that has the bone crushing power. When you hit a leg on exit, you need to know that you're gonna get through it and have a blood trail. Properly placed a field tip will kill, but Montec G5 makes up for the unproperly placed.

muzzy 3 blade 100s ive never had a problem i was shooting at just over 40 yards today and putting them in a tennis ball sized group but ill never shoot at a deer over 30 unless im hunting a field edge

I give a thumbs down to the Montec G5's as I have experienced very poor penatration. They are very dull out of the box and I do not like the idea that I need to sharpen a broadhead myself. I have shot 2 deer with the G5's at less than 20 yards with no passthrough and they were both broadside with good placement.

I switched to 85gr stingers this year and shot a deer and not only did I get passthrough, the arrow went throught the far shoulder bone and all. Very impressed and very good blood for such a small cutting diameter.

Had the exact same experiences. The last one was only 18 yards. No pass through. Found the deer 100 yards later, no blood trail. The tip if the G5 actually bent on impact of a rib bone. They fly great though. Both deer had no pass through and no blood but did do the job. Switching to Spitfires this year.

Okay so I've really researched head out there and I've tried alot out. I'm a fixed blade user so these are all taylored to those.
1. durability: G5 montecs, Muzzy's(regular not the Mx-4), Thunderheads(with 2 o rings on), Innerloc's, Snuffers, shuttle T, Slick tricks, Nitrons and wac'em broadheads.
2. Sharpness: Thunderheads, Wasps, Muzzys, Snuffers
3. Accuracy: G5, Thunderheads, Nitrons, Sonics, slick tricks, Crimson Talon
Hope this helps.

I use thunderheads. I will only trust muzzy, t-heads, nitrons, and wasp-like broadheads that shatters bone and has replaceable blades for several reasons.

For one, I do not trust my broadhead sharpening abilities, nor do I have the time or the desire to. If you can do this, those style heads can have amazing performance, accuracy, and penetration. But if I did have the time and skills to, I still wouldn't, just cause for every report of an amazing blood trail, there is a report about a lack of bloodtrail. While I do not doubt any reports, I have always gotten a good trail from my style of heads.

As for mechanicals, many people have great success with them, especially on whitetails. Many of those people with success would also not use them on bigger animals, and I believe that there's something to be said for that. IMO, there have also been too many reports of them failing, even the new, modern ones. The only game I would use them on would be small game, especially turkeys. The reasons for that would be the lack of a need to worry about a head penetrating, the knock down power, and the larger cutting area.

Understand that I am not bashing anybody on their choices, just saying my opinion.

I just started using the Rage 100 gr. 2 blade broadheads (previously used Muzzy 3 blade) and I am 100% satisfied with them. I shot an 8pt on 10/28 and the picture is worth 1000 words. The buck went 40 yards and was down. It was quartering towards me so the arrow exited in the rear of the left front leg.
