I am looking to buy an ice auger and have a question that I have not been able to find an answer to. They sell them with "straight" and "curved" blades.
My question is what is the difference? What are the advantages or dis-advantages to either?

Assuming your talking about a hand auger. Just get a Lazer(Strikemaster) and be done with it.

Yep It will last you a life time. Stirkemaster all the way. Now what size? 4" 6" 8"? Try doing a search, Last year we had a long post on augers. Or was it the year before:dizzy: I'll see if I can find a link. This should keep you reading for a while. LOL

When I was your age I used an ice spud or an ax. Why work up a sweat? LOL

im not sure exactly why, but curved blades seem to carve up the ice easier than straight blades. and the easier it is to make holes, the better. youll cut more holes, be more willing to move around and find fish, you wont work up a sweat and then freeze after you sit down for a while, etc. youll spend less time cutting holes and more time fishin.

To answer your question straight blades don't cut as well as curved blades, but they can be easily sharpened. the replacement blades are less then half the cost of the curved blades. I don't believe that the curved blades can be shapened you just have to buy new. If you are going to cut a lot of holes a curved blade auger is the way to go. I started out with a staight blade Mora auger, then got a curved blade Lazer. That was a big improvement, then I got a Nils Master and the diffrence was like night and day. The replacement heads are $50 each and worth every penny. Add a batt operated drill and you'll be cutting all the holes you want with a minimum of effort.

I agree. As for size, I have an 8" Lazer and find that it can wear on you if you're cutting a ton of holes. A 6" model cuts a lot quicker and easier. However, for tip-up use and now that I have a flasher, I'm glad to have the extra space in the hole.
