I thought we could go where no one has been before. That way no one is giving away their secret spots. Or we could all go our separate ways while hunting and then maybe campout together somewhere.

That today is the first day of spring, and that I ran out of kindling and struggled to get the wood stove fired up again while we enjoy this Arctic blast…The photos remind me of something to look forward too though, Thanks:)

I'm looking for the picture of the largest morel that I have found. It weighed a little less than 1 pound. I was afraid to pick it. It was so big I wasn't sure that it was a morel. I'll post it as soon as I find it!!!! And this is no fishing...I mean shroom story:D

What does the ground temperature need to be to start seeing them?

Drake,
I'm not sure about the ground temp. But I know that after every rain you should start to look 1-3 days after. They really shoot up after a good rain. We have went out looking and not found any then it rains and in the same spot the day before there was nothing and then the day after to 3 there were tons!!!:D We start to look around Late April early May. I asked the hubby and he said that usually when it 55 or high in temp.

Ding dang it! Every time I start getting excited about collecting some of these tender woodland morsels we get a bitter cold snap or a snow storm like today. The only thing I have to look forward to now, is putting the plow back on the truck; yippee.:( Actually, late heavy snow means moist ground during the warm up; and you know what that means. Should be a good year.

QS you not only catch steelhead, and kill deer, but you hunt mushrooms too. Rivernut is training you right, or is it the other way around. I think we should have a shroom outing too. I'm ready, but we need to go up north somewhere new so as not to divulge our own secret spots.

Cap'n Dave,
It sounds good to me!!!!! I would love to try a new spot. Let me know when you would like to go and lets try to get others in on it!!!! I would like to camp near where we want to look. Make it a whole weekend thing...shrooming, bonfires, beer and stuff;) sounds like a great time to me:D

Sounds like a plan, I should be able to get a free weekend toward the end of the month or first part of May. I'll have to check my calendar. There is a lot of state and federal land up north and I have never hunted them up there, just around home here. I'll see what I can find out.

Just thought I'd bring this back up, with all this warm weather I'm ready. Hopefully some of us can have a little shroom outing up north somewhere. Any ideas of a good area ?
How about mesick? It is after all the mushroom capital of MI. I've never been there to look for mushrooms but I've heard lots about it. Every spring they have a mushroom festival. According to a friend that has been there, many of the locals even sell them by the roadside. So if someone isn't successfull at finding their own they could still buy some fresh picked ones.
Just an idea:)
Heres a link I found about the mesick mushroom festival.
