I am finally going to admit my Viz will not make a hunting dog. He is a good dog, but just does not have the courage to hunt. My Weim did a great job on our trip, he has good nose, he is a great dog, but is going on 9 years. The last day of the trip he was tired and struggling to get in the truck, i cant blame him, as I was too. I will hunt him as long as he is excited to go hunting. But I definately want a new dog in hunting condition by next years season. It takes time to bond, personally train and all that good stuff, so I am starting to look now. I am wondering who may have some dogs out there that may be something for me to consider. I know everyone has their opinion on breeds, I respect that, but I like the shorthairs. I want a dog that is about a year or so, started, shows great promise. I have just had terrible luck with my last three dogs, I want a good dog for a change.

Might be a perfect scenario for a hunting based foster.

The Viz is 1.5. If you spent some time with him you might understand. My weim was not good until about three, but never showed such timidness. The viz has been to two well known trainers, they have had no success. While at camp this year, he would not even come out of the kennel without a leash. He is going to make a good house dog at my brothers.

Get a GSP puppy this winter and I can almost guarantee that you will kill some birds over that dog next fall. Both of my GSP's were about 6 months in their first fall and both had grouse, woodcock and even a pheasant or 2 killed over their points. Just put your time in training and they will be awesome. Send a PM to Roostersmasher, my father in-law got a pup from him and she is birdy as hell and hasn't had much training but, still does a great job.

There are literally a million GSP fans on here. And there have been many GSPs, GWPs, and similar German breeds posted up for adoption on these pages in the past year- including one posted yesterday. More than any other breed. Maybe one of them would be a good fit for you.
Then there's Rescue, GunDogsOnline, trainers with dogs that dont cut it for field trials, etc, etc. GSP puppies will be more numerous than leaves on the trees in July come next spring.
Do The Homework and make a good pick and I'm sure it will come out better this time around. Good Luck.

You can go to one of the NAVHDA training days and see what you might like. Training season will start again come spring and this group, http://www.seminavhda.com/, meets at Highland Recreation Area for training starting in March. Most of the versatile breeds show up. Mine is a GWP and she is excellent for upland and waterfowl. The two breeds you have in your screen name our always represented with GSP's being more common. All are good dogs. I don't know of anything out in Grand Rapids, though there is an excellent GWP breeder in Charlotte.

Boy, that's too bad. Alot of things can be overcome in a young dog, but shyness to that degree isn't one of them. Perhaps a dog like that can come around eventually if there are never other dogs or people around. Hopefully he'll make a good couch potato for your brother.

Have you ever considered a pointer? Bruce Minard, Backwoods on this site might be able to help you out.

I have a litter of GSP pups that are 9 weeks old out of Crosswind Fritz. If they don't hunt birds I will give you your money back.
Bottom line go to a good source and buy a pup .I don't care what the breed is.Those poeple can't stay in the business long by selling dogs don't perform. So they make every effort to turn out a good product.
That does not totally eliminate your chances of getting a dud,but it definitly reduces the risk by a huge margin.

Well, I have seen a Crosswind dog in action, and would have to agree with Scott.
That said, I have a nice GSP foster at my house. 3 years old, house-broke, and birdy.
THAT said, I would like to make sure he is really, really good, before I would have you go down the road to nowhere again...
Just PM me, bud...About this, and the UP, too...

Thanks for all of the information, emails and advice. I bought "Murry", a 2.5 year old GSP. I have worked with Top Gun in fennville with my dogs in the past and had contacted George there in my search. The result was the great GSP. He is a terrific hunter, has that cat like crouch on point, retreaves to hand beautifully. I am very happy with him, we spent Sunday afternoon hunting him on George's hunt club. He seems pretty good in the house, he did attempt a few marking which did not go over big with mama. He comes great, responds perfect to whistle direction, he's like a machine. Hopefully he can bring me some success on Friday. Thanks again
