I just got a fly rod for my Birthday and I want to learn to use it on the Huron River special regs water. What type of flys should i use? What have you guys had success with in the past? Can you suggest any books on technique that would help me?

Thanks

Welcome to the site! Unfortunately I cannot help you as I do not flyfish, but you can make a post in the fly fishing/fly tying forum and i'm sure someone can help you.

Johan, welcome to the site. I am pretty familiar with the Huron but only from Belleville down. Try posting in the cold water fishing. Someone will be able to help you. Our fearless leader Steve appears very knowledgeable in this area. Good Luck.

welcome to the site and to fly fishing! you've come to the right site. as far as the special regs section, Dirk Fischbachs book "the flyfishers huron" just came out a few months ago. its a great book and you can find it some of the local fly shops in the area. i got mine at Bueters outdoors in northville, but i think you can get it at flymart or the orvis store in royal oak. as far as flies you really only need a few for the huron, dark colored wooly buggers, clouser minnows, white dry flies and some caddis patterns, these are my favs and ive had great luck with them, the book list some more.hope ive helped.

Welcome Johan,

When I first started out, I bought Fly Fishing Basics by David Hughes. A great book for beginners that covers all the basics for tackle and technique including some basic fly tying.

Another good book for beginners is The Fly Fisher's Guide to Michigan by Jim Bedford. This book covers many rivers and streams throughout the state and gives great info regarding the Huron. This book goes with me whenever I fish outside of SE Michigan.

Of course, this site is a goldmine of info for those who seek to learn the way of the fly.

My suggestion is take a good assortment of flies out there. You never know what they will hit on. Check back last year and you will see that they started hitting on everything then got a little smarter. These are adult hatchery fish so I don't think you need to worry about matching the hatch. You can see the fish pretty clearly along that stretch. Last year I had better luck with dries than nymphs or streamers. I also didn't get out until May.

My favorites for out there are colorful streamers, and small drys such as midges and griffiths knat.

I've had great success using a Black-nosed Dace with bead chain eyes. One time the local CO wanted to see it. :D
He thought I was using something illegal.

When do the crowds subside somewhat down there? I have been once and had to walk quite a ways to get a spot. I heard to not even think about it the first week.

I did good on mickey finn, griffith's gnat, and some tiny nymphs. It was a good experience. Will probably try once this year.
One thing I didnt like was how mucky it was. I was fishing in muck up to my knees!!

Yes it can be quite mucky. The crowds never really subside, especially when they open it to bait fishing the last Saturday in April.

I'll have to try that pattern Shoeman. I will say that the fish definitely get an education fast out there. When they are first put in there, they might take a fly that looks like the food pellets that they are used to in the hatchery, but it isn't long before they get selective.

On the first day they hit anything that moves, literally. There was a guy who tore off a piece of his sock and wrapped it around a hook and caught a fish. By the fourth day I could only get a few to take an Oregon Cheese glo bug. I was told this is the best immitation of the food pellets they get at the hatchery. I'm going to try some Indy fishing and see if I can get the hang of it. I did a little last year, and got a few fish.

I'll be playing hooky on the First!:)

LOL,

Flies that look exactly like the food pellets work pretty good on most any stocked fish....

Anyone know what hatchery these fish come from?

I live just around the corner from the river, was thinkin about stoppin a couple times on the way into work.

Have they released them already?

You can fish it anytime from april 1 on. I think they plant them the day before or so.

Thanks everybody. If you see a guy in the huron with a hook in his ear or his eyeball stop, pukll it out and introduce yourself.

Thanks again
