The coats always look so beautifull...
I want to get one tanned this year. I love the color they have now but isn't it better to wait for cooler weather wheh they get the winter coat?
Any tips on what NOT to do before sending it off?
Do I just skin it and freeze it or what?
Clueless to taxidermy on the whole...any help?

Skin it and freeze it is the best way

The last I knew tanneries did not accept green(frozen) hides or capes. It needs to be reasonably clean with all chunks of red meat removed. Then it should be laid out flat and have canning and pickling salt rubbed into all areas. After 24 hours and puddles of moisture should be drained off and then more salt rubbed in. After that the hide should be left to dry HARD. Unless tanneries like the Wildlife Gallery in Blanchard have changed their requirements, that is what you need to do to a deerskin. And yes, waiting later for the hair to get more dense and longer would be probably be preferred. Good luck.

I am not aware of any tanneries that accept raw hides. The smaller stuff should be air dried. The bigger stuff needs to be cleaned, salted, and dried.

These people have done several deer leathers and a few hair on hides for me. Very pleased with the quality and service. They make very sure you get your deer hide back. They're convient for paying also.

I just take my hide freshly skinned to my Taxidermist and let them handle it. That goes for any part of the prepration of tanning the hide. I know that my taxiderimist sends it to a tannery there for I leave all that prep work for him. Yeah he charges me a little more for it but at least I know I won't mess up the hide.

WBPlace charges by the size of the hide, with i think a max charge of around $30 for a leather. I've seen most taxidermists want a flat charge of $90.
