I may be way behind on this subject, but, I usually keep up on what's new, hot, and what's working in Deer Hunting as well as Fishing,....etc.

I saw a video on another site the other night, (forgot the site as I didn't flag it) of Hunters using a Whitetail Deer's tail that they would hang off a branch. I talked to the guys at my local Sporting Goods store ....Jack's Sport Shop in Kalkaska, and one had said he had a buddy that hung a Whitetail Deer tail on a Doe decoy that was sprayed with estrus and used a 20 lb. clear mono line to make it flip and had other Deer come in to check it out. Never found out if he got a Deer as other customers and stuff going on broke the conversation, but, it would stand to reason.

Anyway; I bought a Whitetail Deer tail for $4.00 and I'm gonna give it a try.

The video was amazing as just the site of the tail flashing and flipping around brought both Bucks and Does in. It was not a hunting video, but, just a scouting video to show how it works.

Has anyone out there used a Deer's tail?? And if so........have you had any luck, and in what manner did you use it?

For those that haven't tried it, (including myself) ......what do you think?? Does it seem feasible? It sure has peaked my interest.

How about some feedback! :help:

I've been thinking about it ever since I read your post...and now I have a buck hanging in the garage I been thinking about taking his tail and attaching it to a branch at deer level...then running fishing line up to my stand. I am hunting in light tags and cedars next to a food plot and figured I could mount the tail just inside the woods line. My husband thinks I am absolutely nuts :D !! Did you ever try it and did it work

I like the idea of adding it to your decoy. I saw a segment on "scentloks getting close" where they added the wings from a turkey kill to their dekes and it looked like it worked very well on the turkeys.
Let us know if it works for yah.
I have used the tarsel glands from a buck kill to help cover my scent.

I've thought about it too. Just worries me a bit during gun season.

I have found that decoys in Shiawassee county attract more hunter than deer, my decoy has a 4 shot group in the vitals from potato head trespassers.

But yes the twitching tail is the $ for bringing the big guy in.

Be very careful running around in the woods with a deer tail!! I'd have that thing double-bagged and buried in the back of my pack so nobody would see it. If I were to hang it on a decoy, I'd hang it and run!!

A white rag hanging from a branch WILL bring deer in close. Some people laugh at the idea but so did I till I thought about it. A deers tail twitching is what deer are looking for, it will work.

:yeahthat:

I agree 110% !

There are a lot of nuts out there that will just shoot first and ask questions later. A flash of white in the woods at this time of year and the bullets can start flying. No, not all hunters react this way but there are those out there that do. It only takes ONE to end a life!

Be careful.

I've heard that the only way it might work is to have your mother-in-law hold the tail and give it a wiggle from time to time!

It's like the way they hunt in the SW and Mexico. They use dune buggies or pickups and fasten a raised chair. The hunter sits in that chair and they drive around until a buck is sighted.

I was in the desert one time and a fellow stopped to ask if I'd seen any deer. He had this dune buggy with the raised chair. I asked and he said that was the mother-in-law chair. The idea was to put the mother-in-law in that chair and drive under a tree......

I was concerned about that also...but was only considering using it from a tree stand and definitely carrying it in my back pack... might be a better bow season trick. Thanks for the ideas.

Slightly off topic , but you may find this safer and more beneficial?

If you can buy a deer tail you can probably buy or get, for free, a tarsal gland(s) off of a "rut time" buck at the local deer processor.

Strategically place this inconspicuos natural smelling gland in a tree branch and watch the action. It will not alarm does and will gain attention from other bucks in the area. I have some in the freezer for next year's rut:D ....
