My wife would like to know if these organizations are okay or anti-hunting.

Ocean Conservancy
National Wildlife Federation
The Nature Conservancy
The National Park Conservation Association

Are they good or bad?

Many thanks to all who reply.

Not sure, But you can do a little reaserch and find out. In my experiance if a group has Conservancy or conservation in their name their anti something. I would do some research and find out.

I did some work with the Mich. Nature Conservancy building handicap access through some wetland/wildflower meadow. They've been sending me their magazine and donation requests ever since. From what I learned, they focus on buying land to keep it from developers' hands. Of course, these same areas are closed to hunting. However, I think the buffer zones they create serve a greater good by allowing flora and fauna to be, by and large, undisturbed. I did ask if I could get hunting rights for a weekend where I had worked--I bet you can guess the answer to that! I send them a few bucks every now and then, primary for the wetland protection they carry out...

Dennis: The National Shooting Sports Foundation publishes a pamphlet that addresses some of what you're asking:

http://www.nssf.org/lit/WTSAH2.pdf

If interested, you can order these from their website. It's a good resource for sportsman who want to know the official stance of some of the main players. Maybe you can find the websites of the ones not listed for more info. Hope this helps :)

National Wildlife Federation
.

NWF is the national level to all the state organizations such as MUCC.....THEY ARE PRO-HUNTING! Brian Preston, is the gentleman heading up the CWCMI/CWCCMI and Works for the NWF....he is a reagoninal director for 4 states.....since the HSUS become involved in the dove battle, the NWF made sure to help with their resources as well.......SO, NWF is a good organization for sportsmen!

As for the The Nature Conservancy, I believe that are a part of the HSUS from the information that I have recieved from them..........Personally, I would not support any organization that does not see hunting as a vital tool in wildlife management or allows utillization of land to hunters. I can go on and on for the reasons why..........but the bottom line....eventually the $$$ you have donated and that organization will be standing against you and your right to enjoy the outdoors and the spread of your heritage!

Right now, there are many sportspeople out there....supporting the HSUS right now who don't even reallize that their agenda is to end all hunting, fishing, and animal ownership.........WAKE UP!

HSUS stands for Humane Society of the United States.....they are the strongest anti-hunting entity out there.....here is some info after a quick search........

I very highly doubt that the Nature Concervacy is part of the HSUS, as they allow hunting on many of their properties.

"The Nature Conservancy Uses Hunting as a Management Tool
Managing white-tailed deer populations through hunting is an important step in reducing deer damage and protecting the biodiversity of our preserves. At some of our preserves, deer populations have grown well beyond the ability of the natural communities to withstand their effects. For this reason, we employ hunting as a tool to reduce populations in order to reduce the damage that the deer are causing, allowing natural communities to recover their full vigor and diversity."

I have been a member of the Nature Conservancy for many years; and a hunter. In general, they are an organization that is interested in habitat preservation (like DU, TU only without a game species as focus). What is different from other organizations is they realize that they need to colloborate with all land users. Whether it's farmers, ranchers, hunters, fishers, etc. They look for common goals.

That's been my experience. My 2 cents.

I'm sure they have some properties that allow hunting and others that do not. They also seem to be science driven; not emotional like some of the real problem organizations. If hunter harvest helps preserve the balance or is traditional and not detrimental, I think they support it.

The Grand Traverse Regional Nature Conservancy allows hunting on properties they purchase. In the past few years they purchased a huge piece of acreage north of Arcadia from an affiliate of Consumers Energy and they do allow hunting.

While we need to be vigilent with these groups we must also begin to reach out to those who recognize the value of hunting and fishing. To put the same blanket over all of them that we use with PETA and HSUS is more than unfortunate, it is neglect and we cannot afford that...........AND..........they must also recognize our value as sportsmen and women and reach out to us. Effective policy is not made by the far wings (the "bomb throwers"..I'm speaking figuratively of course) of each side, but rather those who are wise enough to foster dialog and discussion.

Amen to that.

Could someone who is very familiar with organizations that are both for and against sportspeople create a sticky that people could quickly reference when they get solicitations in the mail.
