Just trying to get an idea. My Dad paid $325 back in 1994. Just a typical mount, mouth closed, head turned slightly to the side, ....shoulder mount of course.

I'm going to need a Taxidermist in early November and all I've heard in this area is about $450.......ouch.

Cost is mostly based on geography with some quality thrown in.

Pick up the phone book and take a tour of your local taxidermists. Look at their work and balance your decision on the work you have seen and the price you are willing to pay.

For the most part, the addage "You get what you pay for" is true. But, there are beginners and part-timers kicking out good work for little money. And there are plenty of full time shops kicking out junk for high prices.

I charge $350 in the Owosso area.

Your looking about $350-$450 in SW Lower Michigan, but when you take $1000s of dollars to one taxidermist, then they usually cut you a break.

Uptracker- You can't judge a WT mount by price. You have to look at the work. Most people go into a shop and don't really know what to look for. I too often have seen people look at a poor mount and think it was great based on the size of the rack. Take a good look at the mount. It should look like a live deer. The eyes should have a dreamy look, not big and round like its b*lls were steped on. The eyes should not have any paint overspray on them. The nostrils should look like the deer could breath through then, not plugged. Unless it is an open mouth, the only place you should see any lip is in the very front right under the nose. Not a black line running the whole lenght. The nose pad should have some texture to it. The hair should be pulled tight up around the antlers. You should not be able to see the sewing seam. Ask if he uses dry powder tan, stay away from that. Ask what mounts were done a few years ago, they should look as good as recent ones. Look in some outdoor books at WT pictures, a good mount should look like that, ALIVE. I only mount fish now but I was charging $325 back in the 1980s for a WT shoulder mount.
