I live in a subdivision in Roswell GA. My son and I often practice with our bows in the backyard. I have a thick backstop built up behind my target. And am about as safe as I can be there are no homes inline with us shooting. But last week while my son was outside shooting the neighbor yelled at him. Told him to go shoot somewhere else and said he was going to call the cops. Well he came inside and told me. So what else was I supposed to do. I grabed my bow and went out to shot also. About an hour later the cops showed up and talked to me. Then they looked around the backyard at our shooting range. said I was breaking no laws. And said everything looked fine, and left. What the heck is wrong with people if my neighbor had a problem why did'nt he come talk to me? Instead of calling the cops. I am so ready to move to my farm in TN.

Your neighbor has a problem with your son practicing an Olympic Sport in your backyard???:D Sounds Un-American to me! And maybe will to him as well when you point that out to him!

Take an apple over to your neighbors with bow in hand and ask him if he can come over and help you for a second.

You should call the cops on your neighbor for being a "Peeping Tom"! Your neighbor should have talked to you calmly about it instead of calling the police and wasting their time and our tax dollars. Maybe you could have worked something out but now it's too late. Build a privacy fence or plant a bunch of trees so they can't see what your doing. It would be different it your kid was shooting in the direction of their house or garage.
On the flip side my neighbor kid had a BB gun and was shooting at my wood pile that is between our houses. I went over there and told the kids folks to not shoot at the wood pile... behind the wood pile was my bird coop, dog kennel and my truck. I offered to help them build something so the kid had something safe to shoot at... well, 2 days later the kid shot the back window of my truck and busted it... dang neighbors.

Not shooting related BUT...... the person that lives next to me has called and lied to FIVE different authorities concerning my dog being on her porch! Almost 3 years living there and I have yet to speak one word to her or her man. I have however taken every opportunity to annoy them as much as possible: roto tilled the dry garden when the wind blew their direction, put together a compost pile right next to their yard, left the flood light on when they are out having a fire, taken pics of them shooting chipmunks with a BB gun, etc. She even called the police on a new neighbor because the dog barked too loudly in the middle of the day. WHEN we move we will find a neighbor, then look for a house!!

That STINKS, did you talk to them after about fixin your window? If yes what was their attitude?
I don't even think about shooting around my house because I know the neighbors would have the police out everytime and it would'nt be worth it. When I shoot I have to drive 20 minutes to a archery range. Well only 20 plus more years til I can retire and move to the country.

Another problem might be is that I live in a very affluent area. Most of the homes are in the 400k plus range. And most of these folks don't hunt. You should see the looks I get when I pull into my driveway with a muddy truck. After a long weekend of hunting.

Sounds like a load of crap to me. Why can't people just mind their own business. If everyone would spend more time worrying about their own life and less time worrying about what everyone else was doing, it would make things a lot easier on every one. I really like the apple idea too. People being jerks for the sake of being jerks really gets under my skin. Bad.
Did have some probs with some neighbors where I used to live, but not yet in the new house.
good luck with them,
Dan

I'm in a similar situation. Its funny because I'm clean cut and wear a suit 5 days a week and all is well. Then they see me on the weekend carring gun cases or bow case and my deer target in and out of the garage, or cleaning fish on the patio, or heading out with my bass boat in tow and I get double look of what is that REDNECK DOING!!! This year I was thinking of processing my own deer in the garage that should really get their attention.

In Michigan 10pm is the cut off time for loud noise. I'd return the favor. Call the cops. We had a neighbor scream at us for shooting guns on my buddy's 40 acre parcel. Although we'd shot there EASILY over a year! After she calmed down, we explained to her we are perfectly legal. Funny part was, she thought we were shooting cannons! We were shooting muzzleloaders.

well,, you might want to smooth things out with a chat before taking gorrila tactics.
id have a talk and say you know i understand you see a kid in the yard shooting and might not realise he;s being supervised so i wan tyo to know he is well trained in safety and we are shooting in a safe manor. also that while your noisy parties may bother me i respect your right to entertain your friends and family . its only right that you should respect my right to a quiet peaceful relaxing activity like shooting our bows.
then if they act up,,,,doggy doo bombs away!!!!!

Just to make the statement that not all neighbors are knuckleheads... I shoot my recurve in my back yard, my neighbor kids baby sit my son and walk our dogs for fun, and a new addition to our "hood" just loaned me his pop up blind for a season because he won't be able to hunt...!:D Good folk are out there! There just sometimes hard to find!

When the hooptie's stereo is blasting at 12am, we have a problem. It's actually kinda fun. I crank my truck stereo at 5:30 am as I get ready to go to work. I KNOW they don't like it. hehe:evilsmile

If you really want to have some fun and annoy some people that don't like rednecks.(I'll admit I'm one and I don't even care.) You can do what my friend decided to do when I was in the truck with him after deer hunting several years ago. Drive around down town Plymouth with a freshly killed deer on the tailgate blairing " A country boy can survive." I'm sure it didn't leave the best impression, but he just was so proud of that deer and really just felt like ticking off some of the many upscale non-hunting neighbors. It wasn't the best impression, but we thought it was funny.:yikes: :yikes:

After they yelled at the kid they offered to pay for the busted window. I felt bad for the kid but he had a warning, just not enough supervision. I never seen the kid play with the BB gun again.

Not to tell you what to do, but I think I would have went over and talked to him first. I would have asked why he yelled at your kid instead of coming over and talking to you and I would have also asked why he was worried about your son practicing. At that point, I would tell him that what your doing is safe and legal and that you had no intention of stopping.
I have had enough bad neighnors over the years that I try to be as diplomatic as possible. I don't want to get into a feud with someone that might be nuts. I remember my grandpa telling about a neighbor they had back in the 60's that was a real a-hole. He would have all sorts of loud parties and generally disrespect the people living around him. One night he was out of town on 'business' and his house caught fire. Needless to say, no one called the fire department until it had burned for a while. Fortunately, the guy never rebuilt.

One of the many reasons for living in the country if you ask me.
Stereo? Play it as loud as we want. Dogs? Let em run.
Neighbors? He'll see I have a drink in my hand, grab a 12er out of the frig and come over. Bonfire? You bet, he wouldn't miss it.
4 Wheelin? He likes doing that too. SNowmobile trail goes right through his yard (he showed me where to go)
Notice I said he? Yup. One neighbor on my road.
I gave up the city life and glad to be rid of it. I get my taste of it when I travel.
This post just makes me feel more grateful for what I do have.

Well? Well see what happens this week. I'm all for being diplomatic and. But this neighbor has been a pain for years. As I have said several of my other neighbor have had problems with this guy. And as for not talking to him after he yelled at my son. If I would have talked to him right then. He would have been picking his teeth up. I was just too upset. So the best thing to do was to shoot my bow. I was going to do it anyway just had'nt made it out there yet. I have always lived in the country. But my new bride had this big old nice house in town. We bought the farm in TN a few years ago and plan on moving there soon.

Unfortunatley Swampbuck62, you have a bad neighbor and there is nothing you can do about it. I live in Central Michigan and bought a beautiful 40 acre "sportmans paradise", the only bad thing is that Satan himself lives next door. I don't know if there is any advise to give ya, but I will let you know that there is alot of guys in our shoes. Remember, the same laws that protect us, protect them. Do not retaliate against anything he does to you or you will end up being the criminal

One of the many reasons for living in the country if you ask me.
That has more to do with having good neighbors as opposed to where you live. I had bad country neighbors in the past. My in-laws have some real good ones out in the country...The drunk across the street that likes to work on his car at 1:00 a.m. There is nothing like sleeping with your window open and being awakened by this guy's compressor. The guy that lives next to the drunk is had of hering so everything his says, he yells. My father-in-law finally went over and asked him if he could complete a sentence without the using the "F" word.
There is much more, but I think you get the picture. I think they have the worst luck in neighbors. Don't get me wrong, I'd rather live in the country any day, but there are a-holes everywhere, not just in the cities.
In 20 years there wont be any burbs. We are your burbs and are being ruined as we speak by those who want it 'like it was down there'.
Yeah that is a concern of mine. I'll end up having to get 80 acres in Canada an hour north of the U.P. for my small rustic cabin to retire in. I'm with you it burns me to see people move out to a more rural area and want to live in a sub-division, instead of moving to one of the 15 subs they passed on the drive out. My family lives up in the Fife Lake area and Dad is concerned that the sprawl from Traverse city will have a CVS, Starbucks and Walgreens on 131 at the corner of his 20 all too soon.

I grew up in TC have not been up that way in years. My brother lives in the Grawn area. Was talking to him the other night, told me I would not recognise the area. Every chain hotel and resturant has move in to town. The one upside is if sprawl does move out that way. He can sell his 20 for ten times what he has in it and move.

Couple of years ago I just had gotten home and there was a note that my wife was out bow hunting in the back "yard". About ten minutes after I read the note my neighbor two doors down started shooting in his back yard. With in a minute or so I get a panic call from my wife from her tree stand. She was almost crying that the bullets were whisling above her head. So I jumped in my truck and drove to the neighbors house to find them sitting on his back deck shoot his rifle at a free standing target sitting on a dirt trail with no backstop. Also he was shooting across his property on a 45 degree angle towards the neighbor between us and my property. I yelled at him if he knew what was beyond the target. He only could say that he didn't have a clue. I guess he saw the fire in my eyes and quickly unloaded his gun and put it in the house. Since then he hasn't shot a single round off. Needless to say he doesn't talk or even wave as he passes my house anymore.:D
