I took out my deer rifle today and finally decided I wanted to find out who manufactured it. I looked around on the internet and came up with nothing so I'm passing it on to all you super slueths out there. The Gun is a 8x57mm Mauser. It was my great uncles gun and I dont know alot about it. It was most likely manufactured before 1970. Below are some pictures of identifying numbers and symbols on the gun.

This is on the right side of the barrel

This is on the left side of the barrel.

It also appears to say ENG CLEVELAND on the top of the barrel, but at some point in time, dots were stamped over it and all you can make out is ENG CLEV and then all dots.

Let me know what you find. Thanks!

Probably a sporterized pre-WWI era Mauser.

The second picture is of a german proof stamp that was placed on rifles built 1912 or earlier.

It refers to the type of powder and bullet the firearm was proofed for.

In this case:
2.67 grams of GBP or Gewehr Blättchen Pulver (military flake powder)
and the St. M. G. stands for Stahl-mantel Geschoss (steel jacketed bullet)

The powder & bullet type indicate a military rifle.
