This may have been done before. But have you ever sat down and figured what that deer meat reelly cost you. Now if you process your own you can discount that amount. These are just numbers that I'm puuling out of the air. I'm sure a more official total has been posted somewhere else before

1. 4x4 truck or suv .. 30,000.00

2. rifle or shot gun ... 400.00

3. camo and misc gear..500.00

4. deer stands ......... 250.00

5. boots ................. 150

6. ammo for gun......... 30

7. deer lease.......... 600 a year if you lease land

8. bow if you bow hunt. 500

9. gas driving to woods. 400 may be more or less depending on how much driving

10. hotel room ........... 300 if you stay in a hotel

11. ATV ................. 4000 +-

12 Anything I missed .. 150

So that = about $37280 or so.:yikes:

So that deer is somewhere in the range of $250 a pound.:dizzy:

Is it worth it HECK yeah !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:) :)

ammo, still have a box left over from the 5 i bought ten years ago. about .30 cents per deer
one tank of gas gets me to and fro, $35
used ranger pickup about $90 per year
same orange jacket had for ten years, about $5 per year

Sound's like you have it figured out. Don't you just love folks who buy a new gun or bow every year. Or the newest toy thats on the market.:coolgleam But whatever works for you. Heck I bought a farm in TN just to hunt on. So I can't say much.

The first deer we took of the property we bought cost us like $2,200 a pound. The second deer dropped it to abou $1,100 a pound. After that my dad told me to quit thinking while I was out hunting. These were just property prices had nothing to do with other costs.

I have a bow that is older than me, and was a gift.
Arrows aren't that expensive to make. Wood shafts, turkey feathers, and stain are easy to come by.
Broadheads last forever unless lost.
Combo license is $30.00 this year for 2 tags.
I hunt locally so gas isn't an issue.
ATV... DON'T need. The exercise gotten dragging the deer out I do need.
So let's see, last year I spent:
$15.00 per deer for a license (2 deer taken)
$3.68 for a couple hand warmers (I checked the package and added in tax)
$20.00 for gas (not likely I spent that much but for the sake of arguement)
so that is $53.68 for over 200 lbs of venison which is about $.25 per lb!

OK OK So all of you can hunt cheaper then me. But thats really not the point I was trying to make. For most of us anyway,we are not hunting to put meat on the table. Because lets face it you can buy it cheaper. I would deer hunt if cost me twice as much. Because I enjoy it and I can spend more time with my family[Quality time] I also enjoy planting foodplots and working the land. Heck I did'nt even figure in my tractor. That I bought just to do food plots and don't forget seed and fertilizer.

I would be far ahead from a financial standpoint buying Ribeyes and ground sirloin. I've never met a hunter whose primary motivation for hunting was to feed themselves or a family. (I'm sure there are a few out there)

I'm sure my venison tenderloin runs well above $10/lb. While I don't know the actual cost - and don't care to know - it is certainly lower than the $/lb I've spent for gamebirds.

it was an estimate, and coming from 2 deer as I said is not that abnormal.

I am hunting to put meat on the table, whether I shoot a 165" buck or a doe,it all gets ate up. We cut up all of our deer, the whole extended family gets invovled. You cannot simply put a price on that. Hunting does cost money, but it has the same costs as for the settlers and natives who hunted. They had to make weapons which takes time and effort. this can be computed into man hours. The settlers learned from the natives and from their own technical advancements. And who the hell would rather eat beef than venison anyway. Beef is the alternative when you run out of venny and walleye.
plus, how fun is it to go to the grocery store when you could be in the woods chasing deer

Do you need a 30, 000 dollar truck to kill a couple deer a year? Not if you invest in your own property or are a mooch and convince yur buddies to drive to the hunting hole.

Putting a monetary value on this is like saying hunting will at some point become too expensive to afford.

Hunting is "priceless" as far as Im concerned

Gun $850.00
Bow: $650.00
In-laws property to hunt: Free
License: $40.00 Combo + Doe tag
Digi camera to take pictures of deer: $250.00
Gas for BBQ to cook up the straps: $12.00

But getting away from work, a ringing phone, problem neighbor, traffic and the city: PRICELESS

Gun: Inhartited
Bow: which one? Martin 10yrs old 2.50/yr.
Land: In-Laws Free
Ammo: Same box for 5yrs 5/yr
Gas: around 100/yr
Truck: Need one any way so I don't count it
Camo, Oragne and clothing: Mostly Christmas gifts
Miscelanous items $100/yr.
bait Apple tree in back yard: Free

Some where around $210/yr if I kill two deer averaging 100Ibs a peice you are talking .95/pound what a deal?

Thats not including any rabbits, squirrals, birds, and any other game I might kill in the process.

Deer season, heck hunting season is work every penny if you ask me.
