this is sad but its a realy big deal to me... i worked my ass off for this stupid thing... first and fore most, i SAW my first squirrel in the woods as apossed to thousands in the sub on the way home from another skunked squirrel hunt, and second, i shot and killed the little **** one shot behind me and to the left... awcward shot. so there you have it... im extreamly happy to say, that after 4 years and i cant tell you how many trips out for those little crap heads, i finaly bagged my first squirrel. shes in the frezer and ready for me to do some taxadermy on it. just a little one... a small fox squirrel. i think... it is kinda small and had a black stripe down either side of its belly. not a chip munk though iv killed plenty of those. ill have a picture as soon as derek gets em to me.

4 Years!!!:tdo12:

Wow. At least you didn't give up. Congrats.

Just wondering, how have you been hunting for them (still or sit and wait) and when (morn., noon, eve.)? Just trying to help you out so you can bag some more tasty rats.

If you can try getting out a little earlier and find an open spot with some oak trees, the older the better usually. The first couple hours of light are the best and when you shoot one mark it and dont run right to it and pick it up. Let the dust settle and see if any more dont come poking their heads out couple min. later. Ive shot limit at least three times just sitting in the same spot for 2-3 hours. Good luck and enjoy your meal.

Nice Job...now that you have the monkey off your back, the rest of them will come a lot easier.

sounds like you may have a red squirrel on your hands....fox squirrels are a little bigger and taste like chicken. Red squirrels taste more like spotted owls:lol:

Like tstu2 stated it sounds like a red squirrel, they have black stripe down the sides. If thats the case mount it like you said you was going to, don't know too many people that eat them.

Congrats Neil.

IMO, best way to hunt squirrel is to locate in some hardwoods and stand or sit down and be still for a bit.

How many people have wanted to peg a few squirrels who were making such a din while they were deerhunting?

It actually took me a couple of years to bag my first squirrel too. My dad loves to hunt now,but I was the one who was curious and talked him into taking me. Since my dad didn't hunt I had to learn everything the hard way and on my own. My dad likes to hunt with me now and enjoys it, but guess whos doing the teaching........ME!!!! Now I have no problem whatsoever finding game deer, turkeys, squirrels, ect.:D :D Sticking at it is a good thing and every little thing you learn adds up. Before you know it you'll be bagging alot of squirrels.;) Congrats on the squirrel!!!
