Have been going up during July for a week or two for the last five years with the family.First few years the kids where young and we would just park on the structures on the upper lake and slay the gills. Probably a hundred a day. Last few years though the kids have learned how to cast. We have had great luck with crankbaits-reef runners and spinners. Summer of 05 we picked up a healthy catch of bass every time out with chrome and blue reef runner lil' rippers. All on the upper lake.
This last summer the bite was definitely slower. I was told that the DNR had planted hammer handles in the spring. We caught the hammer handles like we used to catch bass. Even picked out a 30" pike which excited the kids to no end. Nice to hear the drag go out every now and then. But everythng was slower this summer. Other people that come up for the gills said that they were slow this year as well. Maybe those young hungry hammer handles are taking care of business.
Seemed like the walleye action was better this year than others although I am limited to providing action for the kids. Its all about the kids anymore - showing them good continuous action. They have come to love the sport but are limited by their ability and patience.
I generally troll walleye on the flats in front of the dunes in 12-15 fow on the north end of the lower hamlin. Have had fairly good action all times of the day. Another good spot is along the east shore of the lower end from middle bayou to the narrows same depth. Even picked an eye out of the upper hamlin this year casting in front of the public lauch just east of Barnharts.
Having said all this, we have found that whatever you do the bass, pike, and walleye seem to love the chrome and blue. Have not been up there this time of year, though.Hope this helps and good luck. Post back when you get back. I am interested to hear how you did.
