Lookin' good WB! :D

Thanks for posting pics on the forum, it sure adds alot of interest and information. I hope more people post pics this season.

FWIW, I noticed that your end-swivel is oriented with the "overlap" out. I think I remember from other posts that you use cable stakes, so youre probably putting a rivet (J-hook) through that hole. But if this trap was intended to be fastened to rebar or a split ring, you'd probably want that last rivet rotated 180, right?

I always make sure my end-swivel is "overlap in" and pinned with a rivet, so theres no way it can open up with any anchoring scheme that I use now, or in the future.

Cant wait to see your catch pics with these beauties! ;)

WB,
Were the lams you used kits or did you make them out of #9 wire?

i used 1/8" or 3/16" round bar that i got from lowes. i will be doing some round jaws this weekend and the round bar seems to bend with them pretty easy. i hear another good wire to use is the stuff they have the political sign on that you see in peoples yards.

Capt did you by annealed wire?

If not, I think Neal does heat treating and annealed wire would be much easier to work with.

I understand the purpose of the baseplating , but could someone explain the purpose of the "laminating"? ( I assume the laminating is the pieces welded to the jaws)

Bf281, the purpose of laminating the jaws of a trap is to create more surface area of the jaw itself. When the jaws close on the intended target (animal pad) the jaw plus lamination create a wider contact area, resulting in less foot damage and pull outs.

Hope this helps.

Won't laminating slow the trap down because of excess weight?

FREEPOP,

Lamanations on any size trap with good springs will not slow the trap enough to cause any concern to the trapper.

Thanks for the help. This may sound like a silly question but why don't the trap manufacturers do this from the factory? Seems like it would be an inexpensive thing to add on right from the start.

bf281,

Some manufactures do offer traps that are already modified, and some supply companies will modify traps of the companies that don't. Alot of people choose to do their own modifications because the ones from the factory or supply dealer will end up costing you $60-$80 per dozen. The trapper that knows how to weld or someone who does can do the modifications themselves for about $2 a trap. So I can modify 30-40 traps on my own for the cost of the manufacture or supply dealers is going to charge for mods on a dozen traps.
