Best bow for the money is the Martin Bengal. As for drop at 40 yards...you're going to get that regardless if you're shooting 280fps or 315fps. Once you get past 35 yards you're going to see very substantial drop.

I think it's the Whisper Creek Sweet Demise.....499.00
Quieter than the SB and the Trykon, almost as fast, and hundreds of dollars cheaper.
Best $500 bow out there right now....

I need to shoot the whisper creeks, they seem a bit too gadgety for me, same with the high end Alpines. The Bengal is alot of bow for the money, but the one I shot at Adam's Archery didn't do it for me. Your best bet is to go somewhere and get your hands on a lot of different bows and buy the one in your price range that feels good to you. If you don't mind dropping some coin, shoot a switchback XT, or a Hoyt trykon, try the Newberry bows, and the Ross bows as well. Shoot what feels right, and don't worry about what every one else thinks.
Good Luck, Let us know what you decide,
Ben

I was up in Alaska fishing 2 weeks ago and the Whisper Creek Rep for out west was at the same lodge that I was. He said that all that plastic stuff on the bow is actually some kind of weird resin that damn near takes a carbide blade to cut. Those bows shoot awesome. Early this summer Hill-top in Greenville was selling them for 1/2 price. $250:yikes: . I wish I'd have bought one. Shoots with less handshock than a SB.

There's alot of good bows. Whatever you like is the best bow.
Before you pick one you should also investigate into who has the best warranties and customer service also.

I've been reading the posts here on this site for some time now and one thing is obvious. The Mathews fanatics seem to want to almost force their bows on everyone else. Funny that no other brand inspires that attitude. Maybe Hoyt's a distant second. I have no doubt that Mathews makes fine bows, but believe it or not, what's best for some is not best for all. I think it's also fair to say that a company may have a superior top end bow, but their mid range may not compare as well.
Buckmaster has it right .... get your hands on as many bows as you can and go with what feels the best. Chevy, Ford or Dodge trucks ... which is best? Hell, they all copy one another anyway. Same with bows. If you like the looks and drive of the Chevy over the others, then it's the best truck for you. It's pretty simple. Don't let the name necessarily be your first priority.

Might wanna stick with what ya got right now. Wait until after the first of the year, you might find better deals and your pro shop guys will have a ton more time to spend with you.
Take a couple weeks or even a month shooting every bow you can get your hands on and find what fits you right, heck half the fun of buying a bow should be takin your time and going to all the pro shops and trying them.
When your done shooting the rest of them, just pick the Hoyt that feels the best, just kidding, pick the brand that fits you.

There's more to a Mathews than just the name, but the name means alot. Mathews has the most outstanding customer service I have ever seen.
I agree with you though, whatever a person is comfortable with is what they should be shooting. But theres a reason people go and try out more than one bow and end up taking a Mathews home. ;)

I think the perfect bow is the one that's PERFECT for you, and you alone! There are some great bows out there, and certainly alot to choose from. My advice would be to go to a few places and shoot 6 or 7 different models and see what feels best for you. Regardless if its a Mathews, Hoyt, BowTech, Martin, Darton, Ross, etc..... All of these companies make great bows, and so do the others I failed to mention. Put a blindfold on and have a shop pro start handing you bows to shoot. I think you'll be suprised!!!

I shoot a Darton Storm and it is by no mean top of line anything but it feels great in my hands. I had it chono'd and I was getting 280 fps. Not bad for not a high end model. Not saying Darton doesn't make high end models. I have shot with people who own Mathews and Bowtechs and I have shot just as well as them. I'm not saying anything bad against Mathews or Bowtechs. I wish I could afford one. Someday!
