I'm thinking about getting a Bitzenburger fletching tool and I noticed you have a choice of helical or straight. Right now I'm shooting straight vanes - the ones that come on my arrows. What's the advantages/disadvantages between the two?

You will hear alot of different opinions on this, but I have never noticed a difference with straight vanes. I've done mine straight for close to 10 years. See if you can find a shop or someone to try.

Stick with the straight, you can still put a slight offset even with the straight.

Advantage to helical fletching is a more forgiving system. They slow the back of your arrow down more quickly to help it straighten out and recover with a less than optimal release.
Disadvantages would be they slow your arrow down, and have less clearance on your rest.
I have never liked helical fletching, and have always shot straight or slightly off-set feathers. If you paper tune, your arrows should fly fine with straight fletch.

Is there one that seems to be more popular? I just picked up the straight bitzenburger but I can always return it. I'm pulling about 60lbs so I don't know if the slow down with helical would make the arrow a bit too slow or not, but then again, I wont take a shot over 30 yards and shoot 100 grain Aftershocks because they shoot just like my 100 grain field points. I'm not sure what the arrows I have now are set up as. I'll have to look when I get home. If they're helical, I'm guessing you can really notice it just by looking at them? If anything they may have a slight offset but that's it.

think of a spiral football. helical spun broadhead arrows stabilise quicker. With drop away arrow rests we can now get away with more helical. I think helical is a tad more accurate.

I didn't notice a difference either way.
I went to blazers and seemed to group them tighter.
