Caught my first walleye handlining today, along with a decent sized smallmouth. Unfortunately my son is still going without. He used to kick my butt fishing but lately he's had a terrible dry spell. Says he's saving up his mojo for icefishing season.
Middle Channel. Upriver from Minnich's.

Congrats Mike. Were you gloved???;)
What do condoms have to do with fishing?
Oh yea, those walleye guys are a bit "different".

Good deal Mike, did you show him how to land fish with 3 leads?
Quick funny story. I took my boss out handlining and I was running 3 leads but he said he had better start with 1 and work he way up from there. After I took 4 or 5 fish I told him he had better check his bait because maybe it was fouled. It was fouled all right....the bait on a 40' lead never made it in the water and was hooked to the seat off his pants!

I was doing a "Michael Jackson". Had on one glove, rubber-faced knit glove, to handle the uncoated wire. Other than that it was "bareback" all the way.
Told my son maybe he better start wearing gloves. "No Way!". he said. "I wear those things all day at work."

The smile didn't last long because I was trying to figure out how to keep all that line from tangling up. I even had it wrapped around my shoelaces. Then I felt kinda bad because I wanted my son to catch one first. Oh well, such is life.
And we both forgot to bring a camera.
The smallie was a trip! I thought I was gonna get a hook in me for sure. He junped a few times and it feels weird when you don't have a rod in your hands.
After doing this a couple of times I now have even more questions about techniques than I had before. I still don't get this "leader over the shoulder or around your neck" thing.

Congratulations Mike, glad to see that you finally put those trolling reels to work. Keep up the rhythm you finally got the beat. You'll be letting those rod's hang & collect dust now. The freezer will be loving the additional guests :corkysm55 .

Hopefully, the article I sent to you earlier today will explain some of it. Putting the top lead over your shoulder is easy to do, especially if you see someone else do it first.
