View Full Version : How long can it stay frozen?

I caught a 5lb. / 21" small mouth 2 weeks ago. I froze it that
night. I wanted to wait until I caught something close and
have both of them along with some small perch all as part
of the same mount. How long can I keep a fish frozen? Does
the taxidermist make the perch or do I have to catch those
too? Any recommendations for a good taxidermist?

Hey Crusher,
A fish in the freezer can last years if wrapped up properly. I have even done some fish not wrapped up properly that turned out great. I always recommend wrapping the fish in a soaking wet towel, then in a garbage bag and freeze.
As far as the perch I can supply small ones for you. Even got some big ones if interested.
I specialize in fish and thats the only thing I do. You can view my website below to see my work. Let me know if you have anymore questions.

Realistics Taxidermy is the only way to go. I fish on the detroit river almost year round. Also fish turnaments, I as well as my friends have many fish mounted by Bill over there. Website is www.realisticstaxidermy.net (http://www.realisticstaxidermy.net). Fish he has mounted for my are, 12.5 pound walleye, 49 inch muskie, 22.5 inch 6.2 pound small mouth, 15 inch 2.3 pound perch.:yikes:

DZtaxidermy is a site sponsor here and does very nice work and is quite reasonable. He has done several mounts for me and I've been very pleased with his work and I'm sure other members that have used him will tell you the same thing. As he mentioned, check out the photo gallery on his site. In my opinion, his Bass mounts are top notch. :)

Does DZ use the real inside gills or are they artificial?

I use the real gills.
Everything on your fish will be original except for the eyes. (no way around that.)

Thanks DZ for the quick response. I like your answer as well. IT seems to me that those who can make an art of making the gills look so real are the ones who know what there doing.......

I wouldn't say his work is the only way to go. 50% of those mounts are great and the other 50% leave a bit (or in some case a lot) to be desired.
Just an impartial observers observation who has had fish done by 4 different taxidermists.
My advice is to speak in detail with your taxidermist about what you expect and be sure he/she takes notes so you can hold them accountable, pics of what you are expecting are a good idea as well if they don't have something to compare it to in their gallery.

The antlers are fine. You will probably need a new cape as the ears are most likely potato chips and the nose/lips/eyes won't be in great shape either.
I had one a few years ago that had spent one year in the freezer unwrapped. It took me three time as long to skin the ears than normal. Next time there will be a charge attached.
