Hey there Arrow I see your still lurking about the website:D.. I went sturgeon fishing last night for the first time and it was pretty cool.. I at least now know how and where to do it, I figure I will get out there one or two more times to try for them big critters.. We got off the water just in time last night before it started coming down in buckets, 10pm was the magic number last night so we did not get wet.. Cya Slick

PS.. Thanks again Land shark it was fun

Slips with minnows. I also tie my own two hook perch rigs with ten pound Floro. that have been working pretty well.

Perch speader with no. 1 tru turn snells then one single hook with a bobber to cast around to catch the occasional small mouth.

Any word on where they are catching them in LSC, if this stuff settles down maybe it will keep the boats off the lake and I will make it out later for a meal or two. Art Van or GPYC?

Same as Ted, pretty much.

I use a 3/4 or 1 oz. bell sinker then two snelled hooks on 12 in. leads. Usually 6 or 8 lb mono. Been using Mustads version of a tru-turn hook for years. Light but durable hook.

I tried taking a picture but it didn't work real well, I 'll if I can't figure something else out.

I actually don't know what that is, I'd have to see one.

Been getting decent numbers along the middle channel. Inside the weeds in 7-8ft of water, odd numbered side. Catch 50 to keep 20 with some big smallmouth thrown in for kicks!

Wire perch spreader with size 8 hooks, shiners and crawlers. Or in inland lakes or
in the bays, i like to cast small jigs.

Thanks there nascarfan that is what I am running now when I perch fish and some times we will have one connected to the snap that holds the sinker on the rig so there is a minnow laying right on the bottom..Here is a picture of what drop shoting kinda looks like, where the hook is tied right to the line, they use this for bass and walleye if I am not mistaken.. When you run the hook thru the bottom of the jaw and out the head it is in the right position so it looks just like if the minnow is swiming in the correct position.Cya Slick

I've always used a poece of crawler on top, minnow on bottom. Using the 10" lead and light hooks gives a free motion of the bait. Hook the minnow up thru the edge of the lips and it'll swim very well.

Definitely do that!!! I wouldn't use the drop shot type rigging. Use a standard rig with a leader and let the big boys suck it in without feeling the mainline. Just my opinion! :)

Here is another question for you perch guys, since minnows can be tough to get at times unless I stop at Johns house to buy my minnows:lol: , I hear you keep a lot on hand there John:lol:..

What would your choice be for bait if you cant get any minnows?????????

I might be switiching gears to more towards perch and some walleye from time to time.. When I was a kid we fished for perch 80% of the time and the rest was walleye but now I fish for walleye 90% of the time and I would not mind catching a few perch locally for a change.. Cya Slick

ps..Wanna hear something funny, I have been trying to find some big 12" boat fenders for Simcoe because the seawall there is bad and I only use them for one time a year why pay $40.00 per fender like they want at the local boating equipment shop.. Well today I found some of them Hippity hops on Ebay for $13.00 for two of them you know the ones the kids use to sit on and bounce around the yard on  they even come with there own handle:lol: and there 18" diamiter "SWEET"

Slick,
You may be onto something with the Hippty Hop thing. Not only use them as a boat bumper, how about under your @ss when the water is ruff.:yikes: The last few times out, nice in the morning but interesting coming back (middle to crocker). I can just imagine it now, all MS member with a big buble butt as they cross the pond. It would be an easier way to spot another member, eh ?:p :D

I use perch rigs with their hooks removed and a #6 snelled flutter hook in place. Think the current helps with the flutter blade spining a bit. Also use cocktail shrimp with good success. Caught smallies, perch and baah-baah's with it ... once a perch on the bottom hook (crawler) and a sheep on the top (shirmp). We call it the Surf and Turf Bait De Jour.

Nascar31Fan-
Question for you...without the wire spreaders, how do you keep the leader line with the hook attached from wrapping around the main line? I've used a similar rig many times, but it seems like I'm constantly straightening the thing out so the leader lines hang out and away. A swivel where it attaches to the main line doesn't seem to help. What's your secret?

Nascar31Fan
08-29-2006, 11:28 AM
No secret really. You can't use them more than a few trips out because the line starts to kink and then I get some twist problems. The only thing I can think of is to make sure the sinkers you use swivel. If you use the ones that have just an openng without swivel the whole rig itself will twist.

I use the same rig in the middle channel, except I use an egg sinker. They don't grab the weeds as easily...

I tried a "drop shot" rig for perch past weekend and IT DOES NOT WORK:( !. I think it has something to do with the way the perch bite, but it was nearly impossible to set the hook. We were catching 8-10 inch perch in the South Channel and I managed to hook up with one out of about 10 hits while using the drop shot rig. Took the couple extra minutes to tie up a rig with 4 inch drop lines and no longer had a problem

Mushy you got mail. Conner Would that be "the summer rig"? I love the original "rig" for my winter perchin.

Zofchak,

I used a drop shot rig set up with 6 lb test line, 3 long shank #6 gold hooks-spaced 6-8" apart and a 5/8 oz sinker on the bottom and absolutely loved it. Slayed 'em with no problem at all on the hook ups. It has become my standard rig.

Aren't only 2 hooks allowed in michigan waters?

To the best of my knowledge it's 4 hooks total. Could be one rod with 4 hooks or one rod with 3 hooks and a slip boober set-up and still be legal. :)

My partner started DS'ing for perch in the spring. After watching him out catch me,, 10 to 1, I quickly became a big DS fan. I love that rig for perch. I tie on 2 small lead-heads with a "twister/tube" of some sort and tip it with a minnow, if the minnow comes off, most of the time they'll smack the tube also.

:shhh: Now you did it John. LSC is going to run out of Perch. There are a lot of little tricks to use for perch, but as far as set ups go Gone fishing nailed it .

What if I'm dragging a 3 hook crawler harness and throw a 2 hook perch spreader out. Am I legal?:(

There may be something in the law about a gang of hooks on an artificial lure being considered 1 hook. I can’t remember for sure. I know many handliners run 3 leads and depending on the bait style, that could be anywhere from 3 to 9 hooks. Maybe someone else can answer that one.
