Can any of you direct me to info dealing with using all the deer ie. tarsal glands, hide, etc. I have a pair of tarsal glands from last year but not sure I have saved them correctly. Anyway I would like to read up on using as much of my deer as possible. Not to sure on brain tanning though.
Thanks
Kev

What do you want them for? IF hunting, its best to freeze them and take them out right before you need them.

I didn't freeze them. A couple of years ago I bought some and soaked them in buck urn supplied with it. Don't really know if it worked but it had a pretty good odor.

I wrap them very tightly in several layers of plastic wrap, to keep air out, and freeze them. Take them out just before you need them. My main concern is the smell of the exposed flesh - something I doubt is an attractant. Since hunters I respect don't seem to think it's an issue, perhaps I shouldn't either. Of course, you only want to use tarsal glands during the rut. Oh yes, don't tell your wife what they are!

Regarding the brain tanning - save your time. If you want a tanned hide, send it in. The one time I did it it took hours and it was still pretty stiff. Clearly it would take less time and come out better with experience. Heck, with the time it took I could have taken a second job flippin' burgers - it would have taken less time and I'd have come out with a few bucks in my pocket. John-Ypsi

Thanks John.
I will treat them different this year.
