I hit the pier from about 2:30 a.m. - 6:00 a.m. this morning. There were a total of only 4 fish caught the entire time. All four came between 4 - 5. The first 3 were kings (2 were 14 lbs & the 3rd was about 12). The final fish was a coho about 7 lbs. (just nice eating size...and mine).
Hits were few a far between due to the strong SE wind but you could cast forever!:yikes: The boats that came out of the harbor, still headed north quite a ways, and only about 5 a.m. (when we left) did any of the boats start running just outside the lighthouses and nearer the pier. It looks as if the fish are close, but not quite there. I would be interested in knowing how close to the pier they were marking fish this morning.
All hits came on the Acme Green Glo KO Wobblers. Some 3/4 some 1/2 oz.
Think I'll hang it up till early next week. Unless somebody else calls and wants to go out again!:corkysm55

I'll be up that way next Friday afternoon for the weekend. My wife and I have a wedding to attend in Traverse City, so I just have to take full advantage of the opportunity to get away to fish the piers. I'm going to head over to the Elberta pier ASAP after check-in and set up shop. After seeing your report from last week Blueump, I am extremely jealous. 3 near 20lbers in a half hour!! I can't wait to give it a shot myself. I fished there for a few hours last weekend for the first time and could not believe what an extremely cool spot that Elberta pier is to fish. It's a beautiful area just to hang out in and relax if the fish aren't biting.

I ran past the pier about 5 am, went WNW, didn't mark much until 70 ft (1+mile). Fished 60-70 down in 170-220 FOW, first fish at 5:45, caught a 2-man limit of kings (6/7) by 7:15, ranged in size from 6-17 lbs. Saw guys jigging in the inner harbor catch a nice ~7:30 on the way by, marked some fish in the harbor.

I agree, the entire Frankfort area is awesome to behold. It is quiet and peaceful, yet full of exciting outdoors adventure!
The catch I had early last week was a once in a lifetime night, for sure! I took my pastor and a few of his family members last night because they wanted to experience the rush. I made it clear to them not to set their expectations too high. I basically told them when you fish from the pier and catch one fish, you've had a good night. If you catch two fish, you've have a great night. If you happen to catch three fish, its a fabulous night. If those 3 fish are all over 15 lbs. its a night you'll never forget!
I've never done the Elberta side, although I've been on the Frankfort pier at least 25 times in the last 2 years. Maybe I'll stroll over and take a peek!

So I take it that the Frankfort pier is the better pier to fish from? The only reason I fished the Elberta side was because I have heard from a few different people that said the Elberta side was more productive.....but it seems like you are doing a pretty good job of nailing the Big ones on the other side.

We didn't mark any fish until about 70 FOW on Saturday as well. We got our fish between 50' and 65' down in 100+ FOW. The fish are trickling in but the majority of the fish are still out a little ways.

Does the Alberta side drop off quicker or do the rocks run 10 ft out from the pier too? Also, while waiting for the little silver fish to arrive is there any decent chance for whitefish or perch?
Yes..I am greedy

The rocks on Elberta go out a ways from the pier too. There use to be a nice hole for spawn / alewife fishing just before the elbow but the Army Coprs of Engineers killed it when they rebuilt the pier a few years back.
I have never seen a "whitefish" taken off either pier. The menominee should start showing up in October with primetime being toward November or so. There aren't a lot of perch around the piers but I have heard of guys getting some nice ones offshore; that may or may not be a rumor. My dad caught a 16"er back in the `80's casting a Little Cleo off the north pier.
There are some fish in the harbor and some have moved up the river.
