WHAT A NIGHT!:fish2: One that you dream of, anticipate all year, and remember for a lifetime.
I arrived at the pier at 2:30 a.m., arriving later than I had hoped. There were a few guys already on the pier, one claimed he was one shy of his limit and had to be at work by 5. The others had some hits, but no fish. by 3 a.m. there were only 5 guys left.
I had my first hit at 3:20 a.m. It came on my reliable 3/4 oz. KO Wobbler - Glo Green. It came off the end of the pierhead, casting into the channel. It fought pretty hard and was much bigger than any of the fish I netted last year. When I landed it, it weighed in at a whopping 16+ lbs. Sure beats the 10 pounders I kept catching last year.
I took my spot again at the end of the pier and the very next cast hooked up again. I knew this was a smaller one, no fight at all...that was until it saw the rocks at the edge of the pier. THEN it began to fight. When we finally landed that one we saw just how big it really was. 19+ lbs. on the scale.
The final fish slammed my KO on the north side of the pier at 3:50 a.m. I knew it was another big one, because it gave me the fight of my life! I can honestly say I have never had a better fighting fish. It peeled my line like a bannana. It weighed in at 18+ lbs.
I'm uploaded my picture of "We Three Kings". I hope I can get some of my older photos deleted soon, so I can add more. My future son-in-law wanted me to go back out ASAP with him and catch more:dizzy:, honestly, kid my arms are killing me! But what a GREAT feeling!

Man, there is nothing, and I mean nothing, that gets the most out of a fish than going toe-to-toe with a truly fresh one that is taken while stationary from the pier.

Ahhhhhhhh - the stuff dreams are made of.;) Great job !
Headed for the west side in a couple of weeks with Off the Wall. Would like to see him limit on real fish while casting.:D Gotta ask for his/our benefit.........what pound test is recommended on the west side. Us east siders are use to light weight fish.:bloos:

We "westernerns" usually use 10-12 lb. test. Although myself, I prefer the Spiderwire 30 lb. test (runs like 6 lb). I've only ever broken off one time, most likely due to a bad knot.

There are no bad knots.............just lucky fish. ;) Thanks for the info.:)

The only thing I can say is WOW.... nice job Blueump. That would make for a good weekend let alone 1 night.
Do you use a backing on your reel with the spiderwire?

Sorry, I don't speak fluent "fisheese"...what may I ask is a "backing"?

Backing on the spool (mono) first before the spiderwire is put on is what Mike is referring to. We generally do that over here to help prevent slippage of the wire in some cases.
" fisheese".... like that.;) And your teaching the younger generation eh.

Nope, never done the backing thing. I've only had the slipping of my spiderwire one time. I just re-fed the line out from the reel until it was about 1/2 gone then re-reeled it back on, the slippage was gone.
I'm still learning about fishing and I hope I continue for the rest of my life. Once you've learned it all, why fish?

No need for the mono backing, just wrap some electrical tape around the spool before you load it with braid. Some people use mono backing if they don't want the higher cost that goes with a full spool of braid, but you lose a lot of line capacity by doing so.
Without the backing or tape the braid can slip very easily, I've seen it happen twice. Unfortunately both times it was when someone had very large fish on and the majority of the line was already out. Both fish were lost due to the loss of pressure.

Fantastic Catch Blueump!!! Gonna be hard to beat that catch for the pier/surf division fishermen!
To be worried about losing any reel space using mono as a backer is just plain foolish. I have all my braided reels(dx30) with mono(20#) backing(just enought to cover the spool) and still have 300 yds of 30# Prower Pro braided on each spool with room for another 150-200 yds. 30# Power Pro is the same size as 6# mono and takes up no room on reels at all.

plus, you can put the screws to 'em with the braid and not get spooled or brake off

I'm glad this thread drifted in this direction. Backing or not, what is the very first step when putting new line on a spool? Do you just lay one end of the line on the spool and start winding, do you put a small piece of tape on the end line, or what? Are there some good links that have some pictures?
BTW, nice fish!! Can't say much for the sweat shirt (it should say U-M), but nice fish anyway.
Thanks,

I use an arbor knot to attach line to a spool/reel. The more you pull on an arbor knot the tighter it gets. Thus it is not as likely to slip on the arbor/reel.
Seems to work good for me anyway.

arbor knot, I usually wrap 5 or more times around the spool depending on what line I use.

Thanks guys. I was at Chabela's to exchange some jeans and somehow a new spinning reel ended up in my cart so I figured I may as well get some line too. So I bought a small spool of some 6# Stern something so I can practice. Went quite well after I swtiched from my reading glasses (2.25 X) to my fishing ling knot tying glasses (3.5 X).
The first one came out pretty good. Cut it off and tried another; it slipped. The next three came out well (tightened down the drag and tried to make the line slip) so I think now I'm ready for the real thing.
Thanks again
