Put gas in it yesterday. Put 128 miles on it over the weekend. 20 miles of it was towing the boat... a lot of it was stop and go city driving, and there was one highway trip to work (57 miles round trip). Oh, and there was quite a few "spirited" accelerations while taking people for a ride in my new ride!! So, after all the rigamarole, it worked out to 17.666 mpg. That's about a 38% increase over the Dodge. And I'd imagine once I start keeping my foot out of the go peddle (I like the acceleration .. something my dodge didn't have) the mileage will pick up a little.

I hear ya. I just made the switch from a Dodge to a F-150. Man, what a difference!!!! I am now averaging the same as you 17.666, the Dodge was 12 on the highway and 10 in the city. Plus, it sure is nice to be able to leave the cruise on when you are going up hills and not have the truck kick down a gear or two.

Yeah, this little Ford will tow my boat in OD all day without shifting up, down, up, down, up, down, on every little incline. The Dodge trannies are just stupid. They are week and stupid!!! This little Escape out tows my 1500 Dodge. Quicker acceleration from a stop, less shifting on the highway, and twice the mileage while doing it. Should have gotten rid of the thing a long time ago.

I topped it off today, about 3 gallons or so. One trip to work and back and some errand running added up to 19.7 mpg. So I'd have to say my highway cruising mileage is in the low to mid 20's at 75 mph. Right where I expected it to be.

Are you sure its a good idea to tow in overdrive?

Owners manual says in normal driving on non hilly terrain that OD is o.k. I've been towing boats for many many years... and I've always shifted out of OD going up any kind of grade... I usually let it shift itself out of OD, then push the button to keep it there till I'm level or on a downgrade. Since most of my towing is on the freeway at 70+ mph, running in OD shouldn't be an issue.

Transmissions usually have 3 or 4 clutches for every gear. OD normally only has 1 clutch. Its up to you have fast you want to wear out the OD clutch. If its slippin at 70 you won't even notice it. Slipping is still premature wear.
Obviously I could see if you were pulling a 20' Four Winns behind a Ranger might be an issue but if your pullin 1000 lbs behind a Full Size truck shouldn't be a big deal.
I would still rec. OD off while towing anything!
just .02 more for a total of .04

Mazda Tribute-Ford Badges!
3.0 with the Mazda G5M-R Trans and maybe a 2.93 rear axle ratio! In the "new addition" to the family post he put AWD/4X4.
Is it switchable? If not rear gear ratio don't matter anyway!

Yup, just as you said above. And yes, it has two settings: Auto and 4x4
Auto is FWD until it senses slippage then it engages the rear end.
4x4 is a full lock... all 4 wheels. Man don't turn to sharp while in this mode!!

Why NOT Mike??
Don't ya like peeling your FACE off the side window??
:yikes:
LMAO!!
I'm getting about 21MPG out of the Toy (mixed driving - but mostly HWY.) and like your 'new against old' vehicle comparison ; I say that there is NONE!!
The GMC was a slug , and it's H.P. was LESS with a bigger displacement.
With about 5MPG less.
This Toy has a 5 Spd. tranny and it flat-out does EVERYTHING better than that ole brown GMC1500 !
This is my first 4X4 also.
;)
I'm NOT missin' those $90+ fill-ups ONE BIT either , Mike...........
