hi iam new to these forums been reading them for the last month but as a newbie iam not to knowlageable to post fishing info so let this be my first because iam dumbfounded
i got a boat a few weeks ago and it ran good most of the time
ended up blowing a manifold wedsay so water got in my oil
i pulled the heads and intake off cleaned it all up motor looks like it was redun within the last 4 years its was very clean inside and barley a ridge in the cylinders
got the new manifolds on it and it runs awsome at my house on the hose so i got to the launch and it wont run for crap takes forever to start and dies just as i coast away from the dock leaving me drifting and screwed
so i pull it out come home tinker a bit and it once again runs even better than before so i go out and get stranded again the same as before
took a while to get running then sounded onk so i take off and it dies and wont restart for like 5 minutes
the second time i end up getting towed about 50 yards to the dock by a sherrif of all things
just what i needed since i havent registered it in my name yet
any ideas?

it would help a little if we know your motor size and style I/O or out board? would look to fuel my self if I had to guess . water maybe rolling around in the float bowl and under load (in the water as no laod on the hoze) it pulls the water out of the float bowl and dies. also if a I/O look a the cap and rotor for some water in there . steve k8vol. P.S. welcome to the forums.

its a 305 i/o the carb has been off and emptied a bunch of times i just changed the fuel filter and gave it some seafoam the gas is fresh it doesnt even get to run on a load because it wont stay running long enough to do so
i dont get it

Check the compression on all cylinders.

what kind of float does it have. If it is a foam one I 'll bet it is gas logged they always look good lift a new one and the old one will be twice as heavy

Your saying that it runs great on muffs every time, but the second you drop it in the water, and start itit just dies? Is it right away that it dies at the dock, or would it run long enough to overheat at the dock before it dies?
If your impeller or water pump is shot, you may run fine on muffs(since water is being forced into the cooloing system), but when your at the dock(in teh lake), the water pump/impellor may not suck water.
How long does the boat run after you drop it in the lake before it dies? Does the temp read OK?

I dont see why it would run great on the hose but not in the pond if it were a carb or compression issue??(I'm not much of a wrench though). I could see if the conditions appeared when it was put under load, but he sayd it dies sitting in the water.

it will not start in the water without like 5 minutes of cranking
iam going out to check the fireing order the local mechanic said it could be a crossed wire
but iam doubtfull
it isnt overheating because it doesnt run more than 2-3 minutes because i give up trying to keep it going and it wont idle anyway to even shift
impeller is good

did you check fuel pump out put , float level, points, rotor, cap ,choke ,it may be starving for fuel . or flooded

well got it back together and took it out and it runs great much better than before but its getting a little warmer than i would like it to so iam going to take a peak at the impeller tommorow
other than that and some fine tuning its all fixed
and my new trolling plate puts it at 1.98 mph so thats good to
see ya on the lake
