I have a 3.5 HP boat motor and I am going to attempt to use it on a 10' flat bottom aluminum boat with 2 men probably a combined weight of 400 lbs.

Do you think this size motor would push us?

You're not going to get up on plane. But it'll get you where you want to go. (eventually ;))

It will push you fine. The biggest problem you have to worry about is your boat choice. If you run into any winds/waves your boat may not be big enough for two people. Bring life preservers. I tried a 10 ft. one time. That was enough for me. :fish:

What is the boat rated for. There might still be a little tag on or near the back that has the recommended maximum HP for a motor.

I have a 10 foot aluminum flat-bottom and with me and the fishing gear, including a 12 volt battery for the depth finder, a 2 HP was just great. A couple of times my son came along and still no problem with that 2 HP pushing us along. With your motor you should be able to move along just fine.

I am wondering if that 3.5 HP might not be overpowered for that small of a boat.

Remember those PFDs, especially in a small boat with 2 people.

Myself and another buddy took his 10 foot duck boat out with nothing but a 36 lb thrust electric trolling motor. It pushed us about 6 or 7 miles an hour. Well I am guessing it was about that fast. We were pike fishing and it was wayyyyy to fast for trolling on 5. Not really that bad for inland lakes. It worked ok for us.

It'll work.

I have a boat that has an under sized used on it from time to time. One of the main concerns is the wind. If you get out somewhere and the wind picks the motor will not be able to out power it. In the past, there have been times when I actually had to throw the anchor and wait for dusk to make a break for the launch before it picked up again.

If you're not in a hurry to get anywhere, it should do just fine. I've got a 2.5hp Nissan that I use on those hard to get to lakes up in Ontario with a 12' semi'V, three of us, total weight around 600#'s. Of course in those lakes all we do is putter around the shoreline trolling and casting to shore and retrieving. I'v eeven used it on my 14' Deep V last year when I was trying to figure out why the 15hp wouldn't stay running.

My 12' flat bottom (42" beam) with a whopping 1.2HP will 5mph with either 170lbs, or ~400lbs in it.
