View Full Version : St. Joe fishing League Sept 16th
adjusted3

This is the last official St. Joe league event for the season.
The date is Sat Sept 16th started no earlier then 4:30 ending at 1pm. 25.00 per boat gets you in the game.
Now for a change in the rules-------
DNR rules and laws apply....Thats it. Quite simple.
No limit on rods/people/gear etc......If you have 10 people on the boat, you may keep 50 fish and fish with 30 rods. we don't care.
But the weigh in will be a bit different-
100% payout to the 2 largest fish in each catagory.
2 largst Kings
2 largest Coho
2 largest Steelhead
2 largest Browns
Lakers are closed at that time.
We will be paying 8 places. If no one brings in a brown, we take that money and roll it into the other catagories. If only Kings are caught, then there will be 2 winners. It could also be the same person if that person has both the largest and 2nd largest fish.
$5.00 of your entry still goes into the smallest fish prize pool. $5.00 of your entry goes into each catagory ($20.00) to be split $3.00 for largest and $2.00for 2nd largest in each section.
This is actually quite simple, you are not fishing for a DNR box, but rather fishing for 2 big fish in each catagory.
We are thinking about running this format for all of next year and would like to run it for this event to see how it works and obtain feedback from those that fish it. We intended this league to be about fun and about catching fish. Over the last few years it has been tons of fun and we are just trying to do something a bit different.

Just when I start getting the handle on catching 1 dnr limit :yikes: . Sounds like fun See you on the water
... Ummmm... I do believe Lake Trout are legal to keep at that time. Remember a couple years ago they extended the season to September 30th.
We are in MM Unit #8... and the season is from May 1st until September 30th. Minimum size is 20 inches!!
Better make room for another category!!
By the way... I will see what I can do about scaring up a crew!!

Don, I think you may be right, Labor day was always the cut off in the past. I will double check that.
We can make that additional catorgory.

Yep, they extended it last year. I remember some grumblimgs when we threw some mud chickens in the basket last year:rant: I don't really know about this format, but team Reel Turner will give it a shot.
Hey Mark, did you get my message?

Hey Mark,
Why not nix the small fish and plug 2 largest lakers in for the $5 payout? This way it works out even for entry fee.
Count me in for now...will round up a crew and post up when date is closer.

"Team" (I use that word loosely) Homewrecker is in. We've been absent for the last couple of outings so we'll be looking to put the smack down on some big fish. No perch allowed in this one, right Don?

Mark, I got the message, I will call you today.
Ben,
I agree on your thinking with the small fish. We can ditch that and add the
Laker division.
We are considering something a bit different for the BBQ. We have done a pot luck in the past few years for the end of season. Can we do that on this one? We will supply the main meat dish, thinking ham.
If anyone wants to come up Friday eve or stay Sat. night, there is plenty of room at the lodge and you are always welcome to pitch a tent or stay in the boat. We should be able to drag the trailer out there if needed.

Hey Mark,
It's on the calender. Not sure if I'll be bringing the boat though. It's been a little hectic getting crews together this year. I was hoping maybe I could team up with someone or could get some guys to jump on my boat. I really like fishing off my rig so bringing it over is no problem. Thing is it's really set up to fish 10-12 lines and I can never get enough guys on the boat to get a big spread going.
If anyone's interested in jumping on mine or can take a rider let me know.
Thanks!

... from some of the "things" I am hearing... sounds like we might be running out to deep water to fish for the 3 year olds by the time the 16th rolls around!! :yikes:
Although... maybe we will be lucky and have the cold water stick around for then too!!!
I would like to meet some of the member that will be there and go out with some one if posable. It would be my wife and me, this would be our second time on one of the big lakes. If not at least I can meet some of you. I would be willing to pay entry fee or part of the gas.

Everyone must launch from the DNR ramp though unless you slip your boat.

Mark, we've never had this rule before. The rule was you could launch from anywhere as long as it was out of the St. Joseph Port. So I would say "Go at it Dan, have fun."
Steve
Dan is fishing with me. Not sure about our third. Weather-wise it looks like we might luck out. Let's keep our fingers crossed.
FRIDAY
SOUTHEAST WINDS 10 KNOTS. WAVES 1 TO 2 FEET.
SATURDAY
SOUTH WINDS 10 TO 15 KNOTS. WAVES 1 TO 3 FEET.
Now all we have to do is hope that the lake rolls!! :D

Just talked with DonP....I'll be fishin with Dan and him...so remove my boat from the list. I most likely will not make the weigh in due to drywall being delivered on saturday. Humm....anyone up for a drywalling party!!!!
I'll be getting water temps on friday at lunch and will post up what it is at the North pier...both inside and outside the channel. Keep those fingers crossed for some hard east winds this week! ;)
Ben
We had some strong east winds yesterday and I was hoping for a roll yesterday but I don't think we got it.
This is what I know... my buddy Donnie watched Channel 3 News (Kalamazoo) this morning and he said they reported South Haven's water temperature at 49 degrees. But... I also talked to another buddy who was out on the pier this morning and there was nothing like that around. He had water temps around the pierheads at 68-ish. But... (and I may be mistaken on this)... I think that Channel 3 gets their water temp. reading from the City Water Plant intake which is on the bottom about a half mile out into the lake (not exactly sure what depth of water it is in). So... actually both of them might be correct.
I know that when I was out Sunday morning we didn't get upper 50's water temps until about 90-100 FOW 90-95' down. So... it is NOT going to roll overnight... it is going to take probably a good 3 days of moderate to strong east winds (which we are in the process of getting right now) for the lake to roll. The day or two of forcasted North winds should help some too. And what is nice... that the forcasted Southerly winds are going to be fairly light Friday... so... with any luck... there will be cold water not too far away on Saturday. The cold water may be getting closer... but it is not at the pierheads yet as of this morning.
There... you have my dissertation on the current lake conditions of Southern Lake Michigan!!  :dizzy: :tdo12:
By the way... as I was typing this... Ben (SalmonSlayer) is probably posting that he will be joining me and Dan on Saturday morning... although he will probably not be able to make it to the weigh in because he is getting a drywall delivery to his house early Saturday afternoon. (Sounds like work to me!! )
.... drywall being delivered on saturday. Humm....anyone up for a drywalling party!!!!
I think every single one of us that will be at the weigh would be awfully happy to accept your gracious offer.... BUT
There is this matter of a "little" football game scheduled to start at 3:30pm in the afternoon. So... if I were you... I wouldn't expect too many of us (if any  ) to show up at your "party"! :corkysm55

Yep, I am bringin the " golden Goby" along, and fishing with Don and Ben.Hopefully after their"less than impressive showing" at Manistee( they didn't have the goby or spanky along), they can step it up a notch for the event.
Mark, the 11th works good for me at the Joe, The 4th does not.
I am gonna mention this early, and again in a few weeks, but our Battle Creek Steelheaders have a tourney on the Joe the sat after Turkey day. It is open to the public, and entries will probably be available by Mid Nov at Tackle Haven, Broadlows, and BJ's. The SW chapter of the MSSFA also holds a tourney there on the following sat, and will have info available at the same stores.
Hope to see some of our Mich-sportsman, attent these events, I know I will be there!:D

Me and the crew are going to try to fish each of those events listed this year. I watched from the Hospital window last year as "Dipsey"............I mean Jake was born day after turkey day and then an extended stay at the meat market. As for this weekend I will be out 12 miles looking for the motherload :) . Might even make a trip to Milwaukee to pick up some "fresh" beer.

Yeah, but that's off shore! Inshore it should be VERY fishable with the south and southeast winds. IF the water cools down, you shouldn't have to go that deep...but if it stays like it was last weekend, you are in for one BUMPY ride!
I say YOU...because I have gotten the "3rd person-itis syndrome" and I must bow out. So DonP is left with him and the Spankster...unless he's already picked up a new 3rd. Sorry guys! and I know I'm going to catch ribbing for this...but the drywall can only be delivered at 10am tomorrow! And I HAVE to be there because I'm not moving 100 sheets of drywall up the stairs myself if they get the wrong sheets on the wrong floor! :yikes: 8 footers wouldn't be so bad, but I got 22 - 12fters and 22 - 10ftrs that go upstairs...and given the way this house addition has gone the delivery guys will probably put the wrong ones on the wrong floor...leaving me to move them to the correct level...NOT GOOD! So, I wish you guys the best fishing this time of year can bring and heavy boxes of mixed fish!
GO BLUE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
