I'll be at the Big M all day Sunday and maybe Monday depending. If you see a big guy in a white 14' Alumacraft you'd better say " Hey Big P!" or a wave will suffice....
Hey when you guys fish the manistee peirs do you usauly fish the north or south?
I fished the south peir one time and I was the only person out there. Everyone else was on the north peir so I figured I must be the idoit fishing the wrong peir. It did look like it would be next to impossible to pull fish through them rocks. But it looks like the south peir actually extends further out into the lake than the north. The main reason I picked the south peir that day because all the boats were trolling on that side.
Is that a good pier or was I an idiot? FWIW I didn't catch anything that day.

I usually fish the north but I know the south can be killer as well. I would just hate trying to get bait on the south side with a cast net, the end is pretty treacherous(sp?) as well.

I fish the south pier at Manistee and have had a lot of luck on it. It's funny that you guys say that most people fish the north because the times I have gone there were always a lot more folks out on the south pier. I would say it really all depends on the wind direction as to what pier is more successful. Using the cast net on the south is very tricky, but it can be done. I plan to be up there this weekend, maybe pull an all nighter into Sunday morning. I'm ready to hear some lines rip!

I'm on my way in about an hour! I'm more than ready, 6 day work week with 10 hour days makes you like that:D ! Plus the fact my buddy calls me mid-week to say they did "real well" on Tuesday, talk about making the week longer!

I probably just missed you or fished the pier near you this morning.
This trip was a waste for me. A bummer of a trip. I used my first tourney trip and all I have to show for it is a 5.5 lb jack.
I got up to Manistee Saturday late afternoon and found the piers empty and nearly unfishable due to the wrongly forecasted high WNW winds. They said North...not WNW. It made it nasty out there. I went out for ten minutes there, lost a rod holder to the wind and decided to try Frankfort instead.
I got to Frankfort for the last little bit of light and got the little jack on a KO Green glow 1/2 oz. There were only 3 other guys on the pier at Elberta. I planned on fishing there all night but the wind died a little and I got hungry so I headed back to Manistee for the late night and early morning. The conditions were better but the water was warm and the fish were just not in close to the piers. All the boats were headed out deep, and I never did even see a hook-up at all. I did take a few pictures though.

Parts of a smashed up Bayliner were laying on the pier about 3/4 down the pier on the outside wall. I hope the guys that caused this mess are OK......anybody hear anything about this incident?

Many hours of casting, getting soaked by waves, losing a rod-holder, and going without sleep and all I get is this bugger. Hopefully, my second summer tourney trip will include some real salmon.

I think you left a little to early.... I was there till 8:30 I fished all night on the northpier from about 11:30. Was a deadnight Fish actual turned on for about 25 when the sun popped out.Which I thoguht was odd. I caught 1 about 12 pounds and snapped 1 off. Had a couple other hits. Was a long night for 1 fish. That ship sucked kept shining that spot light at us and it took them forever to get up the channel. I wouldnt want the job of getting that boat thru there......

Hold on. Looks like Manistee may be jumping on the opportunity for some boat pier jumping PR competition with Ludington.
Boat sinks after hitting Manistee pier

MANISTEE — A 23-foot boat sank after crashing into rocks at Manistee’s south pier about 11 p.m. Monday.
Two passengers were on board and one received a minor head laceration, but there were no major injuries, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.
“The boat was completely destroyed and there are still some pieces on the rock, but the majority of it sank,” said Travis Olson from Manistee’s Coast Guard station.
Jeff Seng of Seng’s Marina said the boat was “beat up pretty bad. There’s not much left to it. It was split in half and destroyed. There’s nothing left but parts.”
Seng said his company would attempt to salvage the boat once the waves and winds on Lake Michigan calm down.
The boat was almost at the end of south pier when it struck the rock riprap, Seng said, adding that the incident was an example of what a powerful force Lake Michigan is.
Olson said about five local departments, including the Michigan State Police, Manistee Fire Department and Manistee County Sheriff’s Office, were involved in Monday’s rescue efforts.
