Hey Guys, I'm very, very sorry about the lack of reports these past few weeks, it's just that I've been real busy with one thing or another and unfortunately for the "reports" sake, most of that hasn't had a whole lot to do with fishing. First off, I had 14 of my immediate family members up from the 28th of July thru the 5th of August and had a wonderful time with them. After that I've simply been very busy around the shop and Motel BBT getting things ready for the fall season.

My niece Faith just found out that this is her Grandmother's ashes.

Between getting the Motel fixed up, putting in fall orders to stock up the shop for all of you ;^) as well as many other projects I'm ashamed to say I've only been on the water twice since the family left. Once I did an instructional type trip with Bob and while we covered a lot of ground from indicator fishing, to C&D, to dry flies, streamers, entomology, etc... We had a great time, but didn't catch much other than a few small fish.

A night or so prior to that John, Carl and I went in to a certain spot we know to be holding a few kings and tried to get them to go, but no hookups other than one nice rock that Carl got! John went back a couple of times afterward however during the day and did get a few good biters along with a couple of foul hookups, but none were landed. We're talking about fixing that sometime very soon...

The water is currently very low and clear with a temp in the mid to high 60s. Word has it that a "few" of the normal early holding spots for the initial early runners have enough Kings in 'em to get a few hook ups, but it'll probably be a few more days yet or even a week before the first good waves hit the lower river. The past couple of years it's been around the 19th when we strike it decent down around Scottville and Custer, but we'll just have to wait and see if that holds true again this year.

Also, from what I understand, night fishing for Browns remains a good way to go for the really big boys, terrestrials during the day with a small nymph dropper can keep the rod bent a fair amount along with the occasional large fish and there are some white flies yet in the evening, BWOs when conditions are right and tricos early morning.

We still have our hands full of projects around here, but the Motel is up and running now (The office/check in is at the shop, but the phone number is 1-231-745-4779), most of our shop stuff is done and we are ready to start fishing again in a big way! Both John and I will be getting out a fair amount from here on out and we WILL start updating our reports at least a couple times a week from here on out with first hand information. Again, I apologize for the serious lack of attention to that recently, I haven't even hardly looked at a computer screen until today...

FYI: We are offering half day trips from now thru the end of the month for hardware and/or fly early King scouting in the lower river as well as our normal full day trips for Kings or Trout. The calendar is fairly open for both of us until the end of the month and then the openings are "currently" Steve: September 1st, 5th, & 6th October 6th, 9th, 11th and then more... John: September 4th, 5th, 6th, 17th, 18th & 28th October 4th, 5th, 6th, 8th, 9th, 12th and then more... Come join us for an enjoyable time on the water and don't forget, we can lodge you too!

I'm going to cut this off now and get back to a few of those projects, but I will be updating very soon again with more detailed info. John's report page can be found by clicking here (http://www.fishbaldwin.com/Reports/reports.cfm?author=John) and he'll be updating that very soon.
Tight lines all,
Steve

I think people would be floored if they knew the # of ashes that have been spread or buried on the banks of the Pm. Pretty much made up my mind I'm going to skip this years salmon circus, we'll see, but for all that do go up, keep your rod tips low, stand your ground/fight em like a man, and have a great time. Just a quick update to yesterday's report... John and I headed out this morning for a quick "scouting" mission for a few hours and ran into a pretty good push of fish. If I had to guess conservatively I'd say we saw at least a couple hundred on the move in the early hour.

We had no luck getting them to bite while they were on the move real hard, but once the sun got up a bit around 8:30 and the movement slowed we started hitting fish on thundersticks. Chartreuse with a red bill got a couple to go, but fire tiger was the best producer. Long story short is we got tore up by a few super bright boys, lost a couple that should have been landed right at/in the net and bagged three that were a little darker than the ones that beat us up.

First to hand...

...and third!

A guy at the landing said that the fish had been moving all night and that someone had caught a 35# fish yesterday evening, but that's second hand. All I can say for sure is that there was at least one good push that we actually saw. Another boat that went mid river yesterday reported having found a pod or two and getting his but kicked more than a couple of times, but again, second hand. Unfortunately John and I had to leave early before the bite was over where we were, but we are heading back out this afternoon to float a different area mid river.

I've got to get ready to go now again, but I do want to say... WOW that was fun! Nothing quite like having those fresh from the lake Kings crush a lure and then try and rip your arm off for a while. That could be it for a while, they may scatter and that area could be empty tomorrow for all I know, but on the other hand this could just be the beginning of a steady run. Like I always say... You don't know if you don't go and we'll be out there checking it out on a regular basis from here on out with or with out trips.

Tight lines all,
Steve
