Sorry for the late response. Here is the article from the Iosco County paper.

Lack of salmon and gas prices blamed for poorest turnout in tournament history
by Holly Nelson
OSCODA — Most of the captains and crews entered in the Lake Huron Sportfishing’s (LHS) 2006 AuSable-Oscoda Fishing Tournament weighed in fish on Saturday and Sunday, but the fish crossing the scales were mostly lake trout.

According to LHS President Gordon Dunham, who was keeping count, the two-day event boated 133 lake trout, 11 chinook, one brown trout and six steelhead. There were also several nice walleye taken, along with a couple of white fish, but neither species was eligible for entry. Total weight of eligible fish for both days was 1,324.05 pounds.
The salmon were few and far between, with those which were caught showing signs of starvation.

The largest salmon weighed in at 12.15 pounds and was taken from My Alibi, earning Capt. Howard Clark and crew the $200 check for the biggest fish brought in Saturday. Lonnie Dowd of Bay City, who landed the fish, said it put up a good 45-minute fight after biting the chartreuse Daredevle suspended from eight-pound line.

The lone brown trout turned out to be the biggest fish for Sunday and the tournament. KJ Fisher Capt. Matt Kellogg said they had just put down the downrigger lines when the 16.9-pound trout hit an Orange Crush. About 20 minutes later, he had it alongside the boat.

Biggest catch of the tournament was the 74.75 pounds of lakers boated Saturday by Capt. Lyle Meyer and the crew of Mission Fishin. The next day was only about half as good, but their 41.60-pound catch was enough to keep their lead and take the first place trophy and $3,000 purse.
Circus Act II, captained by Skip Braun of Saginaw, posted a two-day catch of 90.25 pounds, earning him the second place trophy and a $2,000 check. The third place trophy and $1,000 purse went to Capt. Wally Jambeck and the crew of Fishing Fanatic, with a two-day total of 83.35 pounds.

Fourth place, worth $500, went to Go Deep and Capt. Bill Hjorth. Captain and his crew of sons had a first day catch of only 10.8 pounds, but Sunday’s 60 pounds — the best of the day — was enough to propel him into the money. Fifth place and a check for $250 was earned by Capt. Jerry Perrin and the crew of Shy Poke, with a total weight of 65.35 pounds.

In addition to the advertised purses, LHS gave away 20 prizes, including eight $100 checks, to the registered captains during the weigh-in captain’s drawing.

While the turnout was a far cry from the more than 100 boats entered a few years ago, Dunham said the members of the nonprofit organization were pleased with the 36 entries.

“We were expecting 20 boats due to the lack of salmon, price of gasoline, general economy and the fact that we got our brochures out late this year. But I think the main thing was the lack of salmon,” Dunham commented.

“We were surprised at the support they [the captains] gave us and the turnout,” Dunham added. “I think it went great, all in all. Everyone seemed to have a good time.”

Turnout was the smallest in the tournament’s nearly 20-year history.

Lake Huron’s salmon population has taken a nose dive in the past couple of years, despite the LHS salmon rearing project. Department of Natural Resources fisheries biologists blame this on a lack of forage, such as smelt and alewife.

Its really too bad that the fishing took a dump for this tournament, I had been catching Kings and some nice lakers for 2 weeks prior. Then typical of Oscoda the wind blew in every direction imaginable and messed the water up. Congrats to Circus Act on another great finish. Fishing will improve when the weather behaves itself.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!! Idiots are still preaching this BS! So far the salmon we've hit off the pier have been nicely proportioned. They're mostly 8-11lbs, but a good thickness. I wish I would have took a pic of the thickness on a couple of the bucks, they'd tell a much different story.

Here's a few of them:

The last fish is tilted, so it's not a good body shot, but the fish are far from starving.

Jon, what are you talking about? All the fish in Lake Huron are small, skinny, and sick. In fact, people shouldn't even bother fishing it anymore.;) :yikes:
