This old thing belongs to my neibor, and when it runs, it squirts fuel out of what looks like a float chamber overflow port. It won't idle consistently, oe even start consistently, except with an ether shot. (I hate that stuff). I suspect the needle is sticking, and would like to kit the carb, but the Sears3.com site says the thing is too old, no parts. I say, 'In a pig's eye!' These old crap Lauson carbs were all over those old Tecumseh motors forever - I just can't find'em. The model # is 217-59501, Tecumseh engine number is T-634105199537 This thing uses that little red rubber bulb in the base of the carb for a fuel pump, instead of having the removeable fuel inlet with the flapper gasket thingamajooter. Anybody got any ideas as to where to get parts? I'm entirely too fat and old to be whippin' on that pull cord.

I went to one this morning, but I ran out of time before they could find it. The rookie behind the counter couldn't find anything on it, but the wrenchman out back says with the engine number he can find stuff for it. I'll take another crack tomorrow, number in hand. Thanks for the reply.

I have found that when working with old small engines it is best to make friends with the mechanic in the back, especially the older ones. Even when the parts and kits are so old as to be obsolete they often can figure out the aftermarket parts.

But, my mechanic and I have run into brick walls in the past with some old outboards. It can happen and it has. Hope you have better luck in the morning.

Scour the web for antique outboard collectors' forums - somewhere out there is a wealth of info on what you need.

Try iboats.com forums - lots of experts there.

it's a eska 3.5 hp the tecumseh parts are , carb kit 631354, points 30547 may have a letter also like A ,B. condener 30548 also a letter A,B . spark plug is a J8JC champ. if the shop you went to know there stuff they chould have used the stamp in # on the casting of the carb body and converted to the tecumseh carb # and look up the carb and kit that way! I know this becuse I work for a Larger and older lawn and garden shop for over 20 years now. P. S. also this place chould also help with some of the harder parts to find. http://home.earthlink.net/~brixent/

Eska is the company that made that outboard.

Sorry I didn't see this thread while you working on it. There is a small shop near Escanaba in the UP that not only carry all Eska carb kits.........they also own the company. I own an eska and have been to their shop and am sure they will be friendly with you and get you the parts you need to get her going, they know these engines inside and out. I love my 7 hp because its so strong and light......good motor for going from A to B in my 12ft boat and FAST. Mine drinks gas like a fish but I think my carb needs to be rebuilt as well.

Gotta tella ya, guys - I've burned down a many a manhouor registering on small engine forums, and the responses on this one are the most complete I've seen anywhere. My neighbor's engine aside, I've got a 7.5 Hp Sears/Eska from '84 on my 10' featherweight aluminum skiff. I've rigged stick steering in it, so I can stand on my knees amidships, and cruise the creek, or sit on the floor, feet up on the middle seat, without worrying about the thing wingin' me over the side in a turn. I think it's 40 pounds, and it starts every time with one yank. I e-bayed it up here to Maine out of Alabama maybe 3 years ago, & spent some time getting to know what it likes. Some clubfooted hammerhanded son of a sack of somethin' we just don't need around here stripped one of the starter shroud bolts. 3 ain't good enough. The vibration started fatigue crackin the housing. First, the cracks went around a couple of the shroud mounting holes, breaking them completely out. Instead of facing the 30 plus dollar expense of a helicoil, I brazed washers into the thing, and kept going. Now the washers around the holes were not the weakest area anymore, and the next time I looked, the starter shroud looked like it had spider webs on it. Everybody I've talked to just looks at me like a three eyed five legged dog. Help! 217.586751 is the magic number. It doesn't seem to me like it ought to be that hard to find one of these things, as I had the idea that there must be 13.9 trillion Tec 2 strokes in that size range out there. Would the shroud for an AV640-23 be the same thing?
