Just got my buddies hand-me-down after he got his new Lund. I've got a 30 hp Mariner and was curious as to best palces to by the 50:1 oil mix. Not sure what's a good deal for how much oil.
Thanks

Sams club has Quicksilver Merc oil for $2 cheaper a gallon than my local boat store, even though I dont buy it there. I support my local shop.

Buy a quality oil and skip the discount stuff. The price of crude oil is going through the roof every day and the cost of the refined oils is following. Again, just buy quality oil and mix it at 50 to 1.
Saving 2 or 3 bucks on a discount brand will not help when the engine has pre-mature failure.
BTW, I have noticed that the local boat shops are really not that much higher than most of the discount stores so I stopped driving out of my way for a dollar or two savings. Sometimes costs more in gas to drive out of my way than what I will save.

I'd prefer to stick with the Merc brand. I know Gander Mtn. carries it but wasn't sure if there were other places that might be cheaper.

do your self a favor and do some research compare amsoil to every thing on the market and find out how good it actually is.

Best luck is going to be with a brand from an outboard manufacturer, mercury/quicksilver, evinrude/johnson etc. Best price is usually to buy "Bulk" oil. Basically the dealer just fills a 1 gallon container that you provide from a 55 gallon drum. If you go that route you can save a ton of money

I AM sure I will get a bunch of flack..
There are so many government regulations on oil..
when consumers reports did their comparison the conclusion was buy whatever is on sale.
I Think the days of myths like pennsoil clogs engines are long gone.
Two stroke Engine failures are not too common.
Having said all that..I use Mobil One in My Mercedes cause of fear of deviating from what Mercedes recommends..

sdanville, never read the consumer reports on it. but stop by sometime and I will show ya the difference. I can tell when someone is using westmarine, penzoil etc in their motor vs quicksilver evinrude etc. The only non manufacturer I would use is amsoil.

"Sportfishermans SVC",
I am a bit confused but are you saying that the Quicksilver oil from West Marine is different than what we can buy at an outboard motor shop?? Or, does West Marine have a house brand or generic 2 cycle oil??
Like "ozzgood2001" says I have seen Quicksilver at decent prices at the West Marine outlets that I have stopped at.

I never considered them for oil so that is why I have not noticed this. Last time I was there I did see the Quicksilver on the isle endcap but kept heading out the door since they were out of the product I wanted to buy. Ended up walking across the street to spend money at Lakeside.
what about some of us M-S'r getting together and splitting a 55 gal drum of Quicksilver ?? Sure are a LOT of boats here. I could use about 10 gallons myself !!
It would make it cheaper for all of us.
Would we have to go through an existing boat dealer ?
any takers ???

I have both Quicksilver and Johnson/Evinrude bottles sitting on the garage self right now. So, I am not knocking anyone's choice when they say the way to go is that oil.
My question is: "Why that one over any others?" It certainly seems to be a top ranking favorite here.
Back to the original question that started this thread. Since the price of crude is constantly going up it has started to affect the prices on refined oils for automotive and diesel engines and has really hit the price per quart on any and all 2-cycle oils.

Check your local Meijer as the one near me has Valvoline Outboard 16 oz. bottles on clearance for $1.00 a bottle.

If you are a mechanic, take photo's of the engines. I would like to see. Back in the 70's I worked in a garage where the mechanic's said they could tell a Penzoil engine when they opened it up because of the sludge build up. I thought those days were long long gone ( the inferrior oils). PS I am Going to Meijer today ! Thanks for the Tip.

I will happily snap some one day this week or next. Offbrand oils are a lot better than they used to be, however they still are not where they need to be. You will notice a lot more carbon build up with the lesser oils and over time considerably more piston wear. The larger outboards seem to mind it much more than the smaller ones, on the 9.9/15 and it mainly fouls plugs a lot faster, but those outboards dont tend to get run very hard, on the larger motors you can really see it. A real easy way to tell is mix a tank or two of it and go trolling and then look at how much more crap runs out the exhaust ports and then check your plugs and compare versus when you run the name brand (quicksilver, mercury, yamalube, evinrude/johnson) oils and you will be amazed. I can't speak for amsoil I have never used it but it sounds like it is just as good.
Basically using cheaper oils takes a lot longer to have a permanent effect than it used to but it still does have a negative affect over long periods of time. Anyway I will see what I can do about pics, I think I have a couple dead ones of both variety out in the parts pile.
As for how to get better prices on oil I think that the best way to go would be to get together in groups and buy 55 gal drums. I dont know what kinds of prices most shops would give on them but it should be a substantial savings if you are using a fair volume.

Just some thoughts on buying oil in bulk.
I would think unless your using 30+ gallons a year, just buy it wherever. A buck or 3 a gallon or whatever isnt even worth worrying about if you need to drive for it and such. How much oil you guys use a year??

I only run the Quicksilver oil in my Mariner, and have not had any prob's. Just stick with what the manuf. suggests and you'll be fine. If you are worrying about a couple bucks here and there, just think of the hundreds or thousands of dollars it will cost you to get your motor rebuilt, or the cost of a new one. Just my $.02
