Hey gang. My old fishing buddy needs some help. I was putting a new cable on her this weekend and the spring finally went after about 30 years. I need a spring and might as well replace that main gear that the spring grips to.

Anyone know where I can get this stuff? online, mail order, doesnt matter. I seem to remember a guy on the east side who did repairs on them.

If you have a hard time locating the parts for that Reel I can try and dig up Paul's telephone number and give him a call. He is the manufacturer for A&S reels. I am sure he has the parts that you need.

Aco moved to 23 mile in Chesterfield Township, East of I-94.

sounds like he forgot to tap the screw with a hammer while he was removing the mounting bracket, a little tricky to get the housing off but it can be done,, I would think that a new reel would be as cheap as parts and labor, not to metion the down time with the fish staging out there,,,

perchjerker,
Are you from the East side? I would go with Don's. If you are on the West side Andy's Tackleland on Dix in Licoln Park has a guy that pick's them up for repair. He's reconditioned mine in the past and did a good job at a fair price.

No, Im from dearborn.

Whats happening is the slot on the shaft that the spring is worn and so is the edge of the spring. When I pull the cable out it starts to wind up, then yopu hear a "boing" noise, then it loses all its tension.

A guy at work told me he got a spring for his one time for about $25, but he cant think of the guys name.

I am assuming its worth fixing, its old, but it has always been a good reel.

Thanks or all your help, guys!

Tom- I got the cable at Andys. I was going to ask there if no one knew of anything.

A friend of mine just picked up an A&S from Trenton Lighthouse tackle for $130 something. I'm not a fan of the place but the price is good. Like Firetiger said it might be better to just get a new one.

"... I can try and dig up Paul's telephone number and give him a call. He is the manufacturer for A&S reels. "

Sure would like Pauls' number at A&S if you can find it. I have a reel that needs work, too.
thanks,

Okay, I'm just too dumb curious...

What the H*** is an A&S reel. It must be good if its worth all the trouble you guys are talking about.

Its an old handlining reel.

Firetiger

Its spring loaded reel, you attach a heavy lead weight to a wire shank, and run leaders and lures off it,, kind of like downriggers, but with no fishing poles,, River Rats call it handlining or pulling wire,, Very effective for walleyes and muskys ECT...

I'm glad you asked icedperch... I was wondering about that myself, but wasn't going to ask. I saw your post and didn't feel so bad about not having a clue as to what was being talked about! :D

Perchjerker, The Municipal boat launch down near the foot of southfield will be open next week, and they have an A/S hand reel for sale for $85 Bucks, if the parts and labor exceed that, you may want to reconcider repairing the one you have,,

That's a good price. Do they have more then one. I'm assuming that's the Wyandotte Municiple launch.

Firetiger-thanks for the info. Depending what I find out from him, I might be high-tailing down to the ramp in the morning!

Yep, got out. Nada,zip,zero.

Talked to a local who was really whining up a storm, saying fishing has positively sucked. This is the St. Clair river.
