I'm looking at a 2000-2001 90hp Force boat motor with about 10-15 hrs on it. How much is the motor worth? The motor looks clean and seems to run fine. What should the compression be on the cylinders?

Thanks,
Troy

The Walmart of motors. We were a supplier of Mercury when they bought Force. The Engineers from Merc were',t happry about it. My marine mechanic friend has nothing good to say about Force either.

Theres good ones and bad ones. I had a 1986 50 hp. that I ran weekly for over 10 years and never had one single problem with it. New plugs every year and new lower unit fluid yearly and it ran without a problem. I used it salmon fishing and literally would troll for at least 10 hours at a crack, never missed a beat.

Force engines were famous for overheating/sticking rings. Heard it blamed on everything from faulty waterjackets to carbon build up. I rescently rebuilt a 1990 90hp and it was a hard sell. People tend to shy away from the brand but the truth is they are not bad to work on and mercruiser still supports the parts for them. Decarb often!! The 2001 motor you are looking at might be worth $2,000-$2,500 max I'd bet.

Most people who buy a force are perfectly happy with them and more than likely you would be also. The problem with those motors is convincing someone else they are a dependable. so selling one is like getting rid of a nasty STD

A friend had a Force motor, what a piece of crap. But who knows you might get a good one. Haven't heard to many good things about them though. I've had 2 Mercury's that weren't to good either.

Mostly because or resale, I'd run, not walk away from this motor. Find yourself a Merc or a Yammi instead.

I bought a boat with an 1988 85 HP Force on it. Have had zero problems with it, and I am running it about 10 hrs/week trolling on Erie. Even my buddy who was anti-Force is amazed at how well it runs. Then again, my purchase was based on the boat, not the motor.
