2006 Youth Firearm Deer Season

There will be a youth firearm deer season on September 23-24, 2006 , on all lands in Michigan. Youths 10-16 years of age may take one deer during this special two-day season. Youths 10 and 11 cannot hunt deer with a firearm and are restricted to archery-only hunting.

A firearm, combination or antlerless license or Deer Management Assistance (DMA) permit authorizing the youth to take a deer with a firearm, may be used if issued for the area/land upon which hunting. Archery and junior archery licenses are not valid during this season. The kind of deer which may be taken is the same as during hte regular November firearm deer season. All youth hunters are required to wear Hunter Orange. The youth must be accompanied by an adult at least 18 years of age or older. An adult accompanying a youth firearm deer hunter cannot possess or carry a firearm or bow and arrow and does not need a deer hunting license. It is unlawful to use bait during this season.

Youth Firearm Deer Season

There will be a youth firearm deer season Sept. 23-24, 2006, on all lands
in Michigan. Youths 10-16 years of age may take one antlered deer during this
special two-day season or one antlerless deer if the youth obtained an antlerless
license or possesses a Deer Management Assistance permit. Youths 10 and 11
years of age are restricted to archery-only hunting. Youths 12 and 13 are restricted to firearm hunting only on private land.

A firearm, combination or antlerless license or a DMA permit authorizing the
youth to take a deer with a firearm may be used if issued for the area/land upon
which hunting. The youth must be accompanied by an adult at least 18 years of
age or older. An adult accompanying a youth firearm deer hunter cannot possess
or carry a firearm or bow and arrow and does not need a deer hunting license.
Hunters may not use bait during this season. All youth hunters are required to
wear Hunter Orange. Archery and junior archery deer licenses are not valid for
this hunt.

Q: When and why was the age for youth to participate in hunting lowered?

A: Public Act 280 was enacted this summer. The new legislation became effective on July 10, 2006. This new legislation lowered the minimum age to 10 to purchase a hunting license. A youth must be at least 12 years of age (it was 14) to hunt with a firearm for deer, bear, or elk. 12 and 13 year old big game firearm hunters are limited to hunting on private lands which includes commercial forest (CF) land. To firearm hunt CF land for antlerless deer a public land antlerless license is required.

Q: Can a youth still purchase an antlerless deer hunting license over the counter?

A: Youth 12 to 16 years old (10 & 11 year olds will be included after August 10) may purchase one junior antlerless license over the counter during the public land antlerless deer license application period July 15 through August 15. Junior antlerless licenses sold prior to August 10 will have the incorrect age printed on them. Beginning August 16 private land antlerless licenses will be sold over the counter. Youths may purchase one antlerless deer license a day, up to the maximum of 3.

One point of confusion is that the Anterless permit states that it is good on ALL lands and only the 10-11 are restriced to Archery.

So can a 12 year old shoot a doe(with fire arm) on public if he has a license, but must us a bow to shoot a buck on public land?

Or did someone miss the proofing of the Anterless guide?

IR john, What is the source of your information? I don't believe it is entirely accurate. Specifically, the DMAP is not a stand-alone license. That is, one must have purchased a regular [antlered/antlerless] license to legally use a DMAP.

See page 3

Note: DMA permits are not stand-alone licenses. To hunt deer with a DMA
permit, you must have purchased a regular firearm, combination, archery or
antlerless deer license for the season in which you are hunting.

yes but the $10.00 over the counter doe tag is a stand alone and it does not specifie in the anterless guide that a 12year old can not hunt with a gun for does must be a miss print.
give this the season than lets ban together once again and get this discrimination rule off the book and lower the age to 12 for all gun hunters, sorry i'm lacking money for a lease so because of that my child is not as good as the guys that have private land hog wash:mad:

How is a sportsperson supposed the follow the law if the law is miss printed, or miss leading? This is not a good example for our new youth hunters!

What do you think will happen if they follow the rules that are written and a conservation officer stops them a field. They will get a citation, and that will be a bad experience and defeat the actual intension of this entire situation.

Just my 2 cents!

I posted this to get all the new rules a regulations at a finger tip.

They will be given the correct information and be on their way.

That's what happens when laws/rules are passed at the last minute and people are scrambling in attempt to get the latest and the greatest info out to you. If the DNR waits to print the guides on a maybe the law will change then they get trashed because the guides are late too. No win situation.:dizzy:

I am not clear on "youths 12 - 13 restricted to firearm hunting only on private land'?? Al;so must the youth purchase a firearm or combo license eventhough they can not use a gun??

yes for an adult youth is $10.00

i will have to say due to this changes in the doe permit i had my worst time getting a license for my son took us an hour and a half to get this done they first put him in for the draw than sold him one for private land after calling the dnr myself while in the store did they finally get it straight and sold him a public doe tag. need to get this glitch out of the system or train the clerks on the new process.

the answer to your question is yes according to the rules any hunter out during the youth hunt mst have a combo tag or anterless tag to be in the field. sounds stupid to me a jr tag should be valid. my guess its just a way for the dnr to get more money. all youth tags should be valid during a YOUTH HUNT.

There was a change in plans, and the NRC voted last week to keep antlerless tags at $10 this year.

IR John - Thanks for posting this thread because I have a 12 year old girl that I was planning on taking out to public hunting lands to teach her the ropes, so now I'm going to have to scramble to see if I can scrounge up some private land. If anyone would like to assist by granting access to private land for the youth hunt only , I would love to talk with you and possibly work something out.

Thanks in advance,
Craig

One more point of clarification.....it states above that the youth must be accompanied by an adult at least 18 years old.
If the youth HAS NOT taken Hunter's Education, and has purchased an APC License, they must be accompanied by an adult at least 21 years of age, not 18.

I can't help with the morels but I do have some straps and for that extra special touch, I also have some awesome home brew that a cousin made up for me. Want the straps wrapped in bacon and grill ready?
