I was reading the out-door news and it said they were catching Skams in SH off the pier does anyone have any info on that. I am looking to take the kid next door out fishing in the morning.

Water is really warm right now... probably not going to get into too much. I was hoping the N wind would flip things over but it didn't. Last temps I saw were in the high 70's. Its always worth trying but I think tommorow would be a waste of time. Winds are out of the SW right now at 10-20, so I doubt there will be any cold water in tight any time really soon.

The out-door news is usually a week or two old report, nothing I would go by thats for sure.

I seriously doubt it blew long enough to make it worth taking a day off.

there is alot of warm water on this side of the lake due to the amount of ice cold water on the other side of the lake...

having options when taking pier trips is awesome;)

It was white this morning. The wind has been out of the north to north east for over 24hrs in ludington. If I could I would be there right now. But thats just me I guess.

Coastwatch is not the best site to use for water temp, take saginaw bay: Right now, coast watch says the water temp just off fish point is 41.9 degrees and i think that may just be a degree, or 40, off.

I believe temps help, but there are usually always some poking around this time of year. Take for instance our trip Saturday, the surface temp I got right before I left was 70 degrees, and yet, there were fish taken. Around lake Michigan, there should be some just for the fact there's fish running the rivers, though those are probably fish coming in on the upwelling's, then getting a sniff and heading up.

There should be a few around but a fish or two for hours of casting is alot of work. Maybe I am getting lazy but if the conditions are not right I usually find alternatives.

I hear ya. I guess I'm still young enough to do that and still think it's worth it:D ! I just checked Manistee's temps, and got 74.3 degrees, and that was in the white.

Jeremy,

Being the amature weatherman you are, what site do you use for water temps?

I have found it much closer more often then coastwatch. Coastwatch isn't all bad, the problem is there are just too many days when you can't see the real temp.

I also use the lakeshore temps. Say if the average temp around the state is in the 70s, and manistee is 63 with a onshore wind, then you can figure out the water must be cooler then the land. It also works the other way around, for example, this morning at about 2am Bad Axe was 56 degrees, while port hope was 70 with an onshore wind. This showed the water temps are indeed in the low 70s and not the 40s as coastwatch showed at the same time.

I use this in addition to the site that Jeremy referenced. These are the satellite shots that coastwatch uses to make the contour maps from. They are updated every few hours, the night time readings are usually the clearest since the land temps are cooler. On the Michigan coastline, you will start to see a thin line of cooler temps along the coast. In my experience if you can see this thin line indicating a "turnover", the water is usually cold enough even though it might not show ideal temps, say below 60. These are also subject to poor readings due to cloud cover, but since they are updated so often, they work pretty well.

The shots of the contourmaps linked in this thread are not correct. The contour maps are accurate if they are white, as already said. You will see straight contour lines that run N and S bunched together next to shore after a turnover.

If I didn't have to work tomorrow, I would go in the morning, as I think this little blow was enough and the water will turn this afternoon or tonight. If the forecast is correct, there will definitely be cold water on the Michigan shoreline all weekend.

Jeremy, I never did make it over for the surf browns last year, but I definitely will this year. I can't get over the pictures of those browns you posted last year...

closer than often yes...

however due to last week the site not updating the surface temps page for almost 7 days is not exactly keeping it up to date...

sometimes its been off up to 10 days and that is bad data

I am not sure how accurate it is, but when I want an idea of water temperatures close to shore, I look at the beach conditions :coolgleam located on the Northern Indiana NOAA site, and the Grand Rapids NOAA site. It is only good during the swimming months, but I have found it to be within a few degrees most of the time. Best of luck to all, and don't look now but some favorable winds may be just around the corner.

They take readings differently at different ports, hence the discrepencies.

Wood TV actually had a story on this recently. Holland State Park is the most accurate reading. They actually take a 5 minute reading off the end of the peir. I'd focus in on that.

On the other hand, they had a report last night that the intake temp in South Haven dropped 20*F in 24 hours. However, all indications are that the water temp is not 50*F today!?!?!?!
