Hey everybody. I fished the Grand for the first time yesterday. I wasn't real impressed. Is the water always look like coffee with cream? I put in at Bruce's and motored down to Stern's. I worked the pads a bit. I really wasn't expecting the water to be that dirty. I motored into Potawatimi ( sorry for the spelling) Same thing I tryed flipping the arrowhead roots and working topwater scumfrogs over the pads but I just couldn't get bit. I hate asking for help but I guess I have to. So any info on lures, colors anything that has put a few fish in the boat. I'm not after people's good holes just a little help with what works.

Thanks a bunch
Ryan Baddis

The Grand River always looks like that.

I've had good luck with gold spinners and tubes.

Fished a BFL on the Grand last weekend. Basically, throw a tube, jig, or your favorite pitching lure at any piece of wood on the shoreline in the river. Also, I got fish throwing a horny toad behind my pro who was fishing a Scumfrog. For some reason, they liked the Horny Toad that day.

Also, guys got fish around docks in spring lake with beavers. I also got fish with T-rig Sweet Beavers (California 420) on the river.

The Grand put out some decent fish this year, the guys who ran to Muskegon got beat by the river guys.

Good luck , Ckev

I'd say fish it like you are for smallmouth. Fish the moving water areas, bridge piling and rip-rap are great I like crankbaits, spinners, and tubes. I've only fished the Grand in GR area and Ive only ever caught smallmouth, no largemouth. I dont even bother with the dead water side areas with tons of pads that seem like bass heaven. At least in the GR area Ive never seen any action in these areas. In still water this dark it gets very warm and has little oxygen.

Im sure its different further down the River where they actually have the bass tourny's and more largemouth.

I don't know how you guy's feel about fishing for bass with livebait but I've caught some dandy largemouths on big ( 4"- 6" ) shiners suspended under slipbobers . Back in May when the river was really high and I could'nt get any cats biting I slipped into a bayou and landed a couple bass in the 3 lb range. I've read about this tactic being used on Florida's big largemouths, it works good here too. Only problem is Gar like the shiners too.
