Hey guys,

I need a little help. I got the "pier rat" urge hitting me hard. I had three of my cervical vertebrae fused together (two weeks ago yesterday), so I can't make the pier run for another week or two, but I have been getting the gear together. I'm running low on my favorite spoon: the KO Wobbler 3/4oz. Glow Green.

I live in the Cadillac area and nobody, and I mean NOBODY around here carries them anymore. Meijers has only the 1/2 oz. as does MC Sports. Neither have had any of the 3/4 since last October. Dunhams and Walmart doesnt carry any of them anymore.

I usually take my trips to Frankfort, so Traverse isn't too far out of the way, neither is Big Rapids, if I head south. Do any of you know if any stores carry these Wobblers anymore?

Franks Great Outdoors also has them online, but I've never ordered from them before...anybody had problems? The picture online also shows just the spoon part, no hooks, or metal flipper tail. Do they come ready to fish or do I need to add the extras?

Thanks again for help!

Paul

Franks in linwood always have them, but I've never ordered from there. Their a good bunch, and wouldn't do you wrong on the ordereing in my opinion. Last time I bought some of the same (my favorite also)I got some 1/2 ounce, and they work just as good, and a little cheaper. ;)

I agree, the 1/2oz is fine. Lighter/smaller spoons are very under-rated off the piers.

I've ordered things online from Frank's several different times and they've always been very cooperative and speedy with their shipping. Never a problem.

How far are you from Clare? I would think Jay's would have them in stock. Give them a call. Their website lists Bryan Darland as Fishing manager; their number is 989-386-3475.

The KO Wobblers should come ready to fish.

Frank's makes it waaaaay too easy to order stuff on line. Usually I've had it in Holland the next day, if not the day after.

Great group of guys there. Good thing for me it's on the other side of the state.

That is true, but I have found that they don't hold a glow as good or as long as a K.O. But the amount of glow varies night to night, some nights they like a subtle glow, then others, first cast after a fresh flash, WHAM!

In Oscoda, glo-yellowtail can be a good color CJ wobbler at times. The different watermelons are good too.

Frank's is where I get my glo's, but Bunyan Town in Oscoda has glo-CJ's also. Usually Frank's will order whatever you need, but probably not if your only gonna get like two spoons in two different colors.

I came across a website that sold various kinds of spoons, KO Wobblers being one. The bad news is that I didn't see any glow spoons/lures there. The good news is the prices on what they had was good. I have never ordered anything from them so I can not tell you any more about them. I was thinking about ordering some but haven't yet. Check them out at:

Hope it helps.

Thanks for info. Just be careful, they show the price of $2.90 then down lower if you notice to go up to a 3/4 ounce its $2.13 more! Thats $5.03 and they're not even the glow:SHOCKED: Most Wal-marts and meijers carry the 3/4 glow in KO's and cleo's.

If anyone needs to fill their tackle box. . .
the WalMart in Plainwell had 3/4 oz Cleos going for $2.44 on Tuesday. I think some clerk got lazy, 'cause right next to those were other colors marked $4.22.

I picked up a few of the bargains for myself.

No prob. just thought I'd help save someone a few bucks before they ordered. Besides, if I could find them for that price I'd probobly buy $50.00 worth and be set for awhile, that would be a great deal.

I'll take this in a different direction and suggest you look at a baramundi mauler or a storm deep thunderstick jr.

Worried you won't be able to cast far enough? Put a 1/2 oz. rubbercore 2 feet above it. Not only will you be able to make bombcasts, you'll be able to keep them deep on a slow retrieve.....over the years, deep, slow-as-possible retrieves get me the most fish, ESPECIALLY at night.

good luck, and have confidence in your presentation.

have confidence in your presentation.

It's amazing how much better and harder you fish when you have confidence in your bait, you catch alot more fish too.

Just pick up a couple of glow 3/4 oz KO's at Meijers. Rather pricey at $5.39.

Does anyone change the hooks on these to a VMX or Lazor or something, or are they OK for salmonoids strait out of the box?

Thanks,

I use the ones right out of the box. I also carry the extras just in case.

I use green eagle claws on my glow lures. I am not sure if it makes a differance just superstishus(SP) I broke a hook of one night on a Green glow. Popped a green hook back on ended up with 2 fish that night. I am sure it had nothing to do with the hook but... hey... it works;)

DaveK

Dave,

What kind of green hook is that, single or treble?

I am superstitous too so if they aren't too bad price wise I will pick them up.

Thanks,
DaveK

I don't use spoons much anymore but I know one time when I switched the treble for a big single hook that salmon had NO chance of shaking the hook. I use some single hooks now and also use some VMC Barbarian trebles also, they're amazingly sharp but could use a higher gauge.

Rubbercore means rubbercore sinkers. they are the torpedo shapted sinkers, usually recognized as the water gremlin brand. They have an open slit to slide your line into, and a rubber strip with ears on both sides that you twist. It wraps the line around it, and secures it in place.Easily removable and slideable.

Your right on about that Hemish! The fish in my avatar was hooked with a single, and that fish was ANCHORED! Also, the hooks on K.O.'s are razor sharp right out of the package.

This may give some of you guys a laugh but the green hooks i use are made by eagle claw.

Size 2 or Size 4 lazer sharp. You can get them from wally world and Sharpen them before I use them every time.. I have never had a problem.

Try them if you want.. if not... o well.. its $1.84 ya never know it could make the differance.

When you go to the single hook, do you leave the "sonic flipper" from the KO on, or do you take it off?

Yeah, we just take off the hook.

Here's an example of what a single can do:

im usually throwing a 1/2 oz with a body bait about 2 feet behind it. I am usually using these when i have shallow running husky jerks by rapala, or kwikfish, which really dont cast that well due to their bananna shape.

just about any color of husky jerk has worked, for kings and walleyes, too.

I like the clown pattern, adn the green back, gold body, orange belly husky jerk.

I also throw glow in the dark spoons, and put single hooks on em just like ausable does. I also do that with spinners. Some years ago, if long casts were really important, I used to throw spoonplugs.

I used a #6 homemade gold spinner to land a really nice skamania last week off the pier, and like almost all fish, that hook is BURIED in the bone of the fish's jaw.

I'd say the most important thing when working any kind of bait to produce kings(for me, anyway) is to work it low....and work it ssssllllloooooowww.

See I have caught almost all my fish in the top 5 feet... after dark.. On a MAG sized x glow by northing king....

Yes I know your about to say the moron is casting a trolling spoon what a NEWB...

BUT ....

Think of if this way you are casing a bigger bait then anyone off the pier. and if has a totaly differnt action and you can pull that glowing hog slower then any other lure.
When you let if fall it flutters..

BTW BIG KINGS LOVE IT!

Over the years casting for Kings(28 years) I have found that diff. things work on diff. nights and can even change during the night. If I am throwing spoons I try up first, reeling as soon as it hits the water. Then I will try counting it down deeper on each cast till it hits bottom. I might even try hopping it back along bottom. This works well along the mud line. Most times I also stop reeling and let it flutter down the same amount as that cast started and I will do this every 10 cranks or so. Up to 75% of my fish come on the flutter. Pay attention(sp?)to the beat as it flutters, that skipped beat is a king, set the hook! The action and flutter are not the same on all spoons thats why one night its good and not the next. Some nights a fresh glow is good and some nights a soft glow. As for speed it also varies, I have had some very good catches burning the bait in. This works very well with cranks.

Seems like everyone up here doesn't like the single hooks. Actually they fish diferently all around. I made a bet one day that using his big treble will allow his fish to fulcrum off the hook and I would land more fish.....would-ya know? I went 2 for 2 and he went o for 2.:D

These are the single's I use: http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/links/link.jsp?id=0030848112952a&type=product&cmCat=search&returnPage=search-results1.jsp&QueryText=siwash+hook&N=4887&Ntk=Products&Ntx=mode+matchall&Nty=1&Ntt=siwash+hook&noImage=0

I'll tell you what, when a big single does bite and sink in solid, it's not going anywhere! I'll still use trebs, but I'm gonna experiment alot more with single hooks on my salmon lures!
