I have an underwater camera, it is an Atlantis, it works really good. you can tell what type of fish, size, even see individual markings on the fish. The picture is in black and white, but very clear. My wife purchased it about 4 years ago for me, and I used it alot at first for ice fishing, but I have hung it over the side of the boat while drifting for perch and walleye.

Yes underwater cameras do work. W/ good quality ones, like Chaos said, you can see individual markings on fish. Aqua-Vu is what I have, and it is very clear. It also tells you the temp. of the water which is nice if you dont have a fish finder/GPS

If you want to start on the low end check out the harbor freight cam on the ice fishing forum 79.99 with coupon.:) I have the Aqua Vu that is comparable. I believe it was 119, it has a weather cover with shade, fish skin cam cover, and stand/battery holder.

I have an "OVS 350", Outdoor Viewing Systems (Marcum). Very nice camera set up. B&W. I've watched Perch scuff the bottom of Saginaw Bay 5' deep, 35' off to the side of where I was through the ice on a bright sunny day. Most quality cameras can "see" as well as you can. If you put your head under water and look around, the camera will see as well as you can, possibly a bit better. Meaning, dirty dingy water where you couldn't see a foot, the camera will not either. ;)

Cameras are nice when the water is clear and it's light outside. The LED lights really don't do a lot after dark and you sort of end up with the "highbeams in a snow storm" effect.
