I know the old Stand byes are
Kleo's
-Wobblers (BJ and KO)
-Northern King casting spoons (At least in holland)
-Moonshine Casting spoons (At least in holland)
-Shad raps (In GH guys get htem to work they havent produced for me)
-Northing King MAG spoons in super glow (They cast decent and at night pulling them very very slow or a slow reel with A jerk and let it flutter works well)
What else do you guys use off the pier other then Live bait (being Ailwives)
Just looking for some ideas for this fall.
Has anyone ever figured out how to get a big J plug to cast decent or to sink?

Countdown Rapalas in the largest size. Works for all fish (salmon, browns, steelies, etc.) all year. My go to bait.

J-13 rapalas and my hottest bait are maulers that you can't get anymore due to factory burning down in China.

You can still get maulers on ebay for pretty cheap.

It's been about three years but last time I fished the harbor at Sanilac for Kings I spent hours throwing an assortment of spoons and didn't get a hit. I was just about to give up when I reached for a big rainbow mauler. I threw it about five times and BAM, big strike. I didn't get a good hookset because I was not expecting any hits at all but it worked. I threw it for another 10-15 minutes with another strike but no hookups.
I always liked 3/4 oz. Little Cleos when I was throwing hardware from the pier.

I use all of the above along with X-Raps, Glass Shad Raps and Jointed Shad Raps...
As for spoons I like to paint and tape my own Pentac Spoons and I have produced really well on Wolverine Cobras.

You know a good bait that very few people throw? #14 husky jerks. And, find them if you can, maulers are no joke. I've hooked kings on them everywhere I've fished them, and Oscoda is the only place I know of, where they're popular. Also the aformentioned J-13, countdowns. Also, try reef-runners, #18 floaters, and TRAPS! If you can get them to go on traps, then HOLD ON! A trap hit is not light in anyway. Some nights rattletraps are THE bait to have.

I went out on a friends boat a few years back in Oscoda in Sept. Just outside the pierheads using maulers, we did pretty good. I've never tried off the pier.

You live on the west-side, so can't help you there. I don't know of any western Michigan shops with maulers.

Yup, just clip it on, and cast;) ! I think the boats wear out the J-plug bite, I mean fish are caught on them, but after a month of seeing J-plugs ALL the time, I think the fish get a bit tired of them.
