I am finishing up or at least slowing down on Lk Erie eye fishing and now need to get up north as the lawn needs mowed I am very sure. While up I plan to troll the pier heads in the evenings for a king or two if possible. In the past few years I have just flat lined with J plugs with limited success. I was wondering if you would think pulling J plugs behind the Jet divers I have been using on Erie would work. They come in 10 ft, 20 ft, 30 ft and 40s. I was thinking using the 20s to get the bait just a bit deeper. I am not sure if the jets would run to the surface or would they hold down at the level. My j plugs are up north so I can not experiment but just consider the tactic, what do you think.

Sounds like a plan to me.

They will hold down while trolling and float up if you stop. I experimented with a jet 50 last year when the fish were at 50 down and never had a hit. I tried it at least 3 different times when the bite was good. I just don't know why it did not work.

Should work fine. Try it and post your results.

I have found that if the lure you are pulling behind the jet has too much drag or resistance, it will pull the jet to the surface. I was suprised that i could not even keep a floating rapala behind one. Spoons are about the only thing I have been able to reliably pull behind the jet divers. Perhaps the larger jets 50's woulld stay down beter

Depending on how big your reels are, why don't you long-line baitfish colored maulers? Maulers WAY outfish J-plugs in Oscoda, though you'd never know it, as everybody and their brother's trolling J-plugs off the mouth. This cooler weather and winds will change things. If they hold up, I'll be on the north pier Saturday night. The shallows are in the 70's there, but probably cool some at night, so the salmon sneak in and do alittle feeding and sniffing around the plume. The river is very warm, 82 DEGREES! I've never seen it so warm, hopefully we get a cold-snap or two, other-wise the kings will be staging for AWHILE off the mouth! They are around though, PM if you want alittle detail.

I have tried using a Hot n Tot behind the Jet and something just was not right and I took it off right away. I think it surfaced as said in the other note above. So no lure will work right behind the jet other than spoons is what you have found.
Now Maulers what is that bait, a body style lure. I use baitcasters that have over 200 yards of line, how far back is the set placed. I love to hook the salmon and chase them with my little 14 ft boat, that is some good stuff, yes right off the Oscoda pier is fine with me.

I know. Maulers are very popular with the pier crowd, and I'm used to everybody having a few. There are places to get them still, color selection isn't great, alot of blue-lazer, black-lazer, but those are the best right now anyway, as they're baitfish colored.

Maulers are a big, rattling stickbait, a floater/diver. They work great for kings, especially from mid-September on. You don't HAVE to have them, but they do catch alot of Oscoda salmon, I know I've had my days on them:D ! Like all the guys said, just give your idea a try, you never know. Like I said, PM if you need more info.
snap weights work great for what you want to do. also two or thrre color core works well in close

Let's see .... they were a bait that was made sometime this century, SO, I'd bet my next paycheck that Armstrong's in WhiteHall would have some.  Not sure if he mail orders though ... I doubt it.
If you've never been to Armstrongs, you just wouldn't understand.:dizzy:

Why not pick up a couple dipseys?
Actually... I believe the full name for the Maulers that the now defunct Producers Co. use to produce is call the "Barramundi Mauler". This should help you locate them a little bit better.
Google Search for "Barramundi Mauler" (http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&sa=X&oi=spell&resnum=0&ct=result&cd=1&q=barramundi+mauler&spell=1)

Dipsey divers or a snap weight will give you more control with depth. An in line weight or two is not a bad idea either.
Those maulers look like a t-stick deep jr.
.... they do look similar to the Thunderstick Jr.... but they are a bit "beefier" so to speak. Kinda like a T-stick Jr. on steroids!! And yes... I do have a few of them in my "tackle shop"! ;)

Well I have a few dipseys but really wanted to use the jets as they do not pull as hard as the dipsey. I have a couple of the maulers in one of my boxes after seeing that photo, Chart/W white and I have two, why.
Do you ever use spoons when trolling near the pier in the skinny water if not why not.

Is the color white with a chart. stripe? If so, that's my favorite color, and a very good one on kings up there! Other than that, there's chart./lazer, which is also very good, so if you have either, your good. I would troll small spoons, especially during the time frame your going to be up there. Maulers are better later in the season, though I have seen August kings caught on them. I think the reason for that is, the later in the season, the more ornery and aggressive the fish become as they get closer to spawning, and that big, rattling bait just gets to them!

The Producer Co. made knock offs of a lot of baits. The mauler is a knock off of the deep thunderstick. Also If your are fishing the Oscoda area watch the wind direction. If the wind blows out of the west for a day or two the water temp will fall around the pier and the Kings will get hot.
