Where would you go fishing if you had all next week off and could go basically anywhere within about a 500 mile radius? You have access to gear/boats that could be used for any kind of fishing (salmon trolling, inland lakes, river... whatever).
I am planning a trip next week with a couple friends and we just can't decide where to go...
Any suggestions?
( I know a lot of people are thinking ERIEU or WHEATLEY, but I think we are going to pass on that)

Good choice about Wheatley and Erieau. Great fishing, but not great for vacationing as well.

I would go to Ludington and troll a couple days and then head over to Saginaw bay and get some walleyes.

I'm pretty burned out on salmon trolling, but we are tossing around the idea of lake ontario...

I would either hit up the Soo and the north shore of Superior, or Lake O for those 30lbers.

Somewhere north where a 16" brookie is an eater and it takes 20" to lift an eyebrow.
Can you find that within 500 miles?

If your boat is big enough, you can follow someone out and the weather is o.k., I would go to Lake Superior's Standard Rock and try for giant Lakers. After or before this, you could hit Detour and fish the ports of your choice back.

Hopefully this works. Out of the top 10 fish each week for the past 4 weeks, only 2 have been under 30lbs.:yikes:

Lake Superior's Standard Rock gets my vote.

Anywhere the eye's are. SS Marie, Alpena, Erie, Saginaw Bay or even some closer spots.
Personally I've caught enough salmonoids in my life that the thrill is not there as much as it was though I still enjoy it. I do not think I could ever get that way about walleye.

I want you guys to go to Lake O and give us a good report and all of the details on how they catch those big boys over there. I have been working on my buddies for 3 years and I still can't get them to make that trip. If you guys light them up for a few days that could help my cause. They claim you have to live there to know where all of the good fishing areas are. If a few West MI boys went over there and got into them really good I would love to rub it in their faces. Sorry for being selfish, but I can't imagine it wouldn't be a blast. The night life in Toronto isn't too bad either.
Whenever I hear reports about certain places where lots of fish, or great big huge fish are being caught, I usauly try to avoid those places. So you probably don't want my advice.
But for what it's worth...
if it were me I'd probably try to go up to the soo. I've always wanted to fish there. Plus I know some good brook trout streams up that way. So if the river isn't holding many fish I could still hit some of my old brook trout haunts. Less fuel. Less crowds. And I know right where to fish.
Good luck no matter where you go!

how about Lake St.Clair. Every kind of fresh water fish you could ever want to catch Except the salmon you're burned out on
St. Mary's River.........enter from the Canadian side, fast water below the bridge, walk the concrete wall..........ATLANTIC'S! Then continue north into Ontario all the way up to HWY 11 with 10 cans of OFF, waders, and 4ft. Brookie poles..........where no one has gone before. Well, someone may have been there, but it sure feels like you're the first.

im gonna have to vote for the soo as well. although it may not be visually appealing (think of pontiac but on a river) the fishing along the st marys is world class for so many species its sick. definitley hit the rapids.

Georgian Bay or Put-in-Bay. Excellent scenery at either!!!
I fished Lake O last Saturday on a charter out near Oswego and we had 4 releases in 7 hours of fishing. One 12# king and a 5# king.
It's too early for that area.....that is what I was told. Apparently the Canadian side is holding the majority of the big kings...as the water on the South side is hot....and I do mean hot...like 78 degrees on top, and 70 degrees down 100' hot...
Tired of salmon fishing....wow....I'm going to save that quote and post it in January....
LOL
Good luck.

How about the Cumberland River. Good chance at a ten lb. brown, 50 lb stripers and only about 1/2 mile from Dale Hollow. Big crappie, bass and bluegills.
About 350 miles lots of young people, new territory and a good challenge.
