Hi all.

Many of you are familiar with the ongoing saga of the charging system troubles on my outboard. I'm not certain yet, but thankfully I think I may have it working correctly. I'll know for sure after a good shakedown cruise.

But there's one thing I want to caution all of you on and that is to be careful when running your motors on "muffs". DON'T leave the motor unattended while running! That is unless you secure the muffs in a way that won't allow them to slip off. I was just out running another check on my charging system and had the motor running and everything was going well. I went in and out of the garage a few times just to get something and as I came back to the boat I just happened to step to the back just as I noticed the muffs starting to slip. Luckily I was able to reach down and stop them from coming off. I shut the motor down and used a piece of heavy wire to secure the muffs onto the lower unit. Better safe than sorry!

John i thought you were going to use the alt. conversion kit on your motor ? Didn't you say you had the 470 engine? I bought mine on e-bay and i works like a charm . No more charging problems I had the water cooled voltage regulator "JUNK" on mine before Good luck Dave a.k.a. Slayer :fish:

they do sell muffs that bolt through the intake vents. Good advice though. I never leave my boat running with muffs on unless I'm there. I keep an eye on the temp gage and every now and then look over the back

Oh no I've got a '91 Merc 90 outboard. I just happened to be looking for a new regulator at the same time you were. By the way, I'm pretty sure the one I bought is going back. It doesn't regulate anything! The voltage pushes up near 17V at times so I called the manufacturer and I'm waiting for a return authorization. I think I'm done with aftermarket parts. I'm afraid I'm going to have to bite the bullet and just buy genuine Merc parts if I ever need them.
