I just picked up a mid-to-late 70's 9.9 Johnson. The steering pivot is locked…i.e. will not turn. There has to be a locking mechanism somewhere! Can somebody help?

Shoot, I'm not even sure of the age. Anybody know how to determine age? Model #J10RCTR and serial #E5751114.

If it is not seized, there is a screw on the side that tightens against the rotating shaft. Look for that and back it out a bit. Has it got greese in it? On my '75 anyway.

Here is my 1975 9.9 'rude. Greese fiting on the bottom sloted screw on top. You need to have it tilted up ti access the screw.

It is a 1983 based on the model number. Adjust as mentioned before and grease the grease zerts.

Exactly right! Fired her up last night and took a quick spin. Solid little motor with good pull…I was thoroughly impressed. Thanks for the help!
