Don't let crafty carp slip away
Fly-fishing for carp nearly always involves sight-fishing in water less than 4-feet deep, and it's a stealth game. Ideally, you'll drop the fly about 2-3 feet ahead of and 3-5 feet beyond the fish and then strip it back slowly so that it passes within a few inches of the carp at eye level. Tailing fish -- head down and picking invertebrates off the bottom with their tails in the air -- are easier to fool than cruising fish.
