I once saw a picture in a fishing magazine of a fish that looked like a very large walleye.I think the article said that this species of fish could weigh in above 50 lbs. They were caught somewhere in Northwest Alaska and Russia.Does anybody know what the name of this fish is?Have anybody ever caught one and if so how did it taste?

Zanders are in Europe and what you saw may have been a Sheefish?

I was in Germany over my Christmas break and I went to the Hunting and Fishing Museum in Munich. they had a fish mounted that was just like a walleye but over twenty pounds. Looked just like a walleye only huge. I forget the name but it was in german anyways. It was a cool museum. If you're ever in Munich check it out.

The fish in Germany was definetly a Zander, as they are popular over there (Zander is the english name, I dont know the German name for it either). Zanders look exactly like walleye, only bigger. My cousin's friend caught one while in europe, and i have seen pictures. As for the Alaskan fish, it could be an Inconnu, or sheefish, but that is in the whitefish family and actually looks kinda like a tarpon... See this link:

and look under "what's a Sheefish"--see photo at bottom

From Infisherman magazine page 13.
Zander, also known as pikeperch, is a close relative to the walleye and sauger. Known as Stizostedion lucioperca in the scientific world, this species is native to eastern Europe and has been widely transplanted into rivers, lakes and reserviors from central Europe into Kazakhstan. Two other species, the Volga zander and the sea pikeperch, inhabit more limited area in Europe.
Zander are popular with anglers who fish livebait and artificals, similar to walleye tactics. Though the all-tackle record (I.G.F.A.) stands at 25 pounds 2 ounces, from Trosa in Sweden, fish over 40 pounds have been reported.
In the late 1980s, a controversial introduction brought zander to Spiritwood Lake in North Dakota. Opposition to the introduction, based on fears of the spread of this exotic and potential harm to native sauger and walleye populations, forced termination of the experiment, and the only known US zander not in captivity.

The only way I think you would ever see a Zander here in the states would be if someone had land locked private body of water. And the DNR gave them a permit.
