I know all the common baits people use for perch but I was out on Ferrysburg Pier last night and one older (More seasoned) gentleman was using mini (salad shrimp) as bait. He had a mixed bag of fish mainly cats and perch with a few Sheep. Has anyone else tried this for perch fished off bottome with abotu a 2-3 ounce sinker. He had a crappie rig with a crawler or alewive on top but most came off shrimp, he had more fish than anyone but said he was out there about 7 hours (25 perch).

I got three jumbos off the pier back in early june while fishing for steelhead. They all three came on large cocktail shrimp. That was the first time I've caught perch on shrimp but evidently it works. Salad shrimp probably would work better since they're a bit smaller. I was surprised the perch could eat those cocktail shrimp like that. But heck they swallowed em whole!

Never shrimp, used chicken skin in winter and worked good, not sure if it would work off pier? Maybe on jig. Also thought of using some cut bait (as in pieces of those plentiful sheep:D ). Perch ordourves:SHOCKED: :p

Yes, shrimp will work for many freshwater fish, including perch.

I read an article once in a magazine about fishing for perch with the small canned shrimp, so of course I had to try it. The perch really seemed to like it but it falls off the hook too easy and stinks up the boat. I'll stick to minnows.

Well being a west coast trained fisherman, I've used shrimp to catch many a salmonid and it is difficult to keep on a hook at times. Some of the bait threads are great for delicate baits. Ghost cacoon and spider thread are a couple of brands that work good. Maybe even tying the tiny salad shrimp to a small floating lure off the bottom would work.

Does raw shrimp or pieces of raw shrimp stay on the hook better?

I was going to ask the same question... So I just put some raw shrimp in the food processor, tied up some small shrimp bags... Will let you know how they work..
