I'm in! Actually since the start of the weighted draw system I guess that means I'm in four times! ;)

When was the deadline?

I have applied every year since I was 14 except for when they started the weighted system. It seems like my memory on the subject has diminished the last few years.

It's funny, I get an e-mail from the DNR for everything else except the elk season lottery.

I'm so angry at myself right now.

Hi GvDocHoliday... I looked all thru the regs and i dont see a july 27 any where so i am sure it is August 8th. I am not sure if combining all the area for the early hunt will make for a better hunt or not because of the heat but i guess it can't hurt . I know last year was way to hot to walk and spot and stalk. I hope we have milder weather in august this year...Any way good luck to all.

could you expand more on the weighted system?

Ok i stand corrected I was looking right over it. it is july 27 that you can check on the dnr web site but you will still need the letter that they send you inorder to elk hunt. It will be sent out to you by the 8th of August and this needs to be brung with you to the mandatory orientation in order to recieve your elk license that they give you at orientation. Good luck and have a great day.

The weighted system works like this if you have applied every year since 2003 you will have 4 chances in the draw .If you started applying in 2004 then you would have 3 chances and in 2005 you would have 2 and in 2006 you will have 1 chance. It is my understanding that the new system goes thru and pics out how many chances you have and it puts you thru the system once for every chance you have. I am not sure how much better this is as we dont have that many tags available so i would think all the tags would be gone on the first chance thru. I am no computer program geanus so if any one else has any ideas please chime in.

Does the process differ at all from Michigan's bear hunting preference point system?

it doesnt have anything to do with the bear lottery. With that system you will get a permit before someone with less points. With the elk permits you can get one the first time you apply still. Spme one with 4 points has a better chance but it doesnt mean they will get a permit before a first time applicant

Hey Duckboy123.....Don't feel like your alone i have been trying to draw a tag ever since the first two hunts in 64 & 65 and when they started it back up in 84 until 2006 and haven't drew yet. It does make you wonder how some people could draw 3 and 4 times and someone else never draw but thats just the luck of the draw i guess...

We have the same lottery system in AZ. You get a point for every type of big game you put in for and don't get drawn. And depending on how many points you have is how many chances you have.. The bad thing is that when you have alot of points you need to be selective on what hunts to put in for.. As of this year I have 14 Elk Bonus points and 12 antelope points. Now that I have So many points I have to be a little picky in what units I put in for , also restricting my success of being drawn.

Example: My Buddy had 11 bonus points for elk last year, When it came time to fill out his application he had his wife do it for him, which she had done every year. Comes to find out when she was writing down the hunt #s She made a mistake and put his 1st choice in for an archery COW TAG..
Well lets just say you had to be there when he opened that tag up..Was not pretty. So he lost all of his bonus points for a cow tag.. He ended up signing it over to his 11 year old daughter. She havested her 1st elk on opening morning. My buddy told me after that it was well worth it to see her take her 1st elk.

So you tried getting a tag before you were old enough in the 60's?

huntingman: My profile was not updateing my age as it should so i had to redo my profile . I was born in early 1950 so that would put me of age to apply in the 60's. Just for your information you could bow hunt when you were 11 in the early 60's and i was 14 in 1964 so i know i was of legal age ....For some reason this site was not updating my age on my profile so i am going to assume that is why you made that comment ....I have fixed the problem on my profile so it shows the correct age. I hope that me being born in 1950 solves the question of how i applied in 64.

Well If i read the number thing correct I have 3 chances this year. But really doesnt mean my chances are really all that better, just more.. My Father however was lucky enough to draw his on his second year trying, and of all years the first year they decided to change it to once in a life time. To leave a long story short, the week was horrible hunting, (no tracking snow) and rain. The one snowy morning we had was overshadowed by a sun in the early morning leading to an ice over the snow.. Did see one beautiful bull, and got a shot but was unsucessful on the last day of the hunt.

Now he and I are planning on a trip to colorado, hopefully with better luck. My first Bow hunt for elk

Good luck to all the lucky ones who recieve a permit this season

I pulled an anterless tag in '98. At the required DNR education session before the hunt, they said it was a chance in 2 lifetimes to draw. That being said, statistically your "extra" chances don't mean much when there are only roughly 200 tags and 50,000 applicants. It is truly like winning a lottery.

I have never missed a year, so that is why the wife or a daughter will draw!

Oh well........ I will get to guide her if she does I guess! :D
